I think this type of election shows why repealing the 17th amendment is important.
First, repealing the 17th amendment is the most elegant form of campaign finance reform because it eliminates the campaigns by eliminating the elections.
Second, it would reduce the effect of someone like McConnell from Kentucky in the selection of a Senator from Alabama.
Third, assuming for this exercise that the Alabama legislature would have chosen from among Luther Strange, Roy Moore, and Mo Brooks, who would they have selected? I honestly don't know the local politics, but it's a choice between the appointed incumbent, a Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, and an elected member of the House of Representatives.

Pres. Trump is smartly putting the ball back in Congresss court with DACA.
Congress let Obama do their dirty work for them with executive orders on other things too, including letting Obama get away with stealing state powers to oppress the states by promoting politically correct, constitutionally unprotected LGBT issues.
Although Trump is accomplishing a LOT as president, it remains that since the state sovereignty-ignoring uniparty Congress wants to get rid of him that his first two years in office are arguably for practice. That being said ...

Since corrupt Congress is the biggest part of the sewer (imo) that Trump wants to drain, it is actually up to us patriots to drain the sewer in the 2018 elections, patriots supporting Trump by electing as many new members of Congress as they can who will support Trump.
In the meanwhile, patriots need to make sure that there are plenty of Trump-supporting candidates on the primary ballots.
Patriots need to qualify candidates by asking them why the Founding States made the Constitutions Section 8 of Article I; to limit (cripple) the federal governments powers.
Patriots also need to make sure that candidates are knowledgeable of the Supreme Court's clarifications of the federal governments limited powers listed here.
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
"State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress [emphases added]." Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added]. United States v. Butler, 1936.
Also, unlike career members of Congress who wrongly remained silent while misguided state officials abridged the constitutionally enumerated rights of citizens during the lawless Obama Administration, patriots need to make sure that candidates on the 2018 primary ballots commit to the following.
Candidates need to commit to making and enforcing 14th Amendment-related laws to prosecute misguided state officials who use state powers to abridge constitutionally enumerated protections, 1st Amendment-protected religious expression and free speech for example, such actions prohibited by Section 1 of the 14th Amendment.
14th Amendment, Section 1: All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States [emphasis added]; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

On another thread we were being told by some Freepers that Strange will be a rubber stamp for Trump, and that’s why both he and Pence are siding with McConnell to his puppet. America doesn’t need another GOPe stooge. It needs independent conservative thinkers who have the guts to stand up to the Dems and, more importantly, to stand up to McConnell and his cabal.
The GOP is truly a disgusting party. In some ways they are just the same as the DNC in dirty tricks and dirty candidates.

I quit the NRA when they supported Harry Reid. They have yet to be rehabilitated.
If elected (he was not elected to the Senate, just temporarily appointed to the vacant seat) Strange will be anything BUT a rubber stamp for Trump; Strange is solid GOPe and is McConnells man. Strange will not promote Trumps agenda; Moore will. Moore will not be afraid to stand up to McConnells obstructionism and that is why McConnell has the big guns & big money out to oppose him!

Noting that I gladly voted for Pres. Trump and do not regret doing so, please consider the following.
Patriots need a patriot fighter like Moore in the post-17th Amendment ratification Senate to help get the voters, the Senate and Trump up to speed on the federal governments constitutionally limited powers. (I suspect that the uniparty Senate is much aware of its limited powers.)
McWeasal, and the Barbour motorcycle gang from Mississippi pretending to be conservative Republicans ride again to save a seat for the Democrats/liberal Republicans.
They are disgusting.
Please demonstrate to Sen. McConnell that we're coming for him next.

The NRA has been on the wrong side of lots of close elections. I’m a life member of the Second Amendment Foundation.
But I do have an NRA sticker on my back windshield. It looks good between the Warehouse Skateboards sticker and the Don’t Tread on Me.
Ah, but the Washington elites have NOT figured out the “overload” factor of campaign advertising (especially in special, small area elections!)
Near-continuous advertising and phone call record-a-voices to endless landline telephone recorders IRRITATES the bloody h*ll out of everybody who is endlessly exposed to the “same old, same-old” repeated advertisements.
Your right, social media lets the truth get past the (democrat/establishment voices in the national and local press corpse. And the endless advertisements (and mailings that get thrown away unread) only end up paying consultants. The media. The professional politicians.
But I won't tell Washington until this run-off election is over and Moore safely nominated AND elected to office.
I think unchallenged negative ads are tough to overcome.
We saw this with Kelli Ward in AZ vs. McTurd. He outspent her 10:1, ran three ads per hour here in PHX. She couldn’t respond.
