The commander of the Navys largest operational battle force and his subordinate in charge of the attached destroyer squadron have been removed from their positions as a result of ongoing investigations into a string of incidents this year that resulted in the death of 17 sailors and hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, USNI News has learned.
U.S. 7th Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Philip Sawyer removed Rear Adm. Charles Williams, commander of Combined Task Force 70, and Capt. Jeffery Bennett, commodore of Destroyer Squadron 15, from their positions on Monday (Tuesday local time) due to a loss of confidence in their ability to command, two Navy officials told USNI News and later confirmed by a statement from the service.
The officials told USNI News the removals of Williams and Bennett are part of ongoing accountability actions as part of the Navy investigations into four surface ship incidents three collisions and a grounding in the Western Pacific this year.

Have they fired the persons responsible for allowing incompetent/negligent folks to be recruited into and serve in the Navy “driving” our warships? What about the recruited incompetents...are they still driving the ships?
What is the Navy hiding?
I wonder if they are really the culprits for this or just the sacrificial lambs?
Something is really stinking.
No. Its sad to see Americans die needlessly because of inept career officers
Politically correct policies and diversity just might not be consistent with seamanship and military preparedness. It will take a very long time for the Obama commissars to be purged from the military and replaced with true warriors. The damage done by their malfeasance will not be corrected soon.
Four incidents in the same Western Pacific area in a few months? What gives?
Does the Navy have no inspector general system ?
Seems like they should at least finish the investigations before firing people.
So the Navy has fired some top officers.
When will the Navy release the Fitzgerald investigation report? How long does it take to spin the navigation errors by the Fitzgerald? It has been three months since the Fitzgerald collision.
Maybe the top officers that have been fired thus far deserve to be fired. I do not know. Nor do I know if their replacements are more competent.
Or are these top officers due to retire soon and being terminated makes it look like the Navy is doing something?
Until the Navy releases the detailed reports on how these collisions happened, all this other stuff is a distraction.

> Does the Navy have no inspector general system? <
It’s probably like with any other organization. An inspector general who blows the whistle makes enemies. No one wants to make enemies. So no one blows the whistle.
That’s the same area that had the big scandal about kickbacks in the Fat Leonard deal.
Would be a safe bet to expect a few early retires from there as well.
This some infuriating crap for sure !
And in what China considers it’s “sphere of influence”. Hmmmm.
There’s a retired USAF Lt. Colonel living here who did his final duty as an IG.
He said wearing the officer’s uniform meant you were prepared. Anyone not prepared or found wanting in some critical way should to be removed and the next in line promoted.
Yes, he dinged some careers. It needed to be done.
If there was incompetence in the recent Navy problems, why were the Captains picked?
Because they were the best? (I hope so)
Because they supported Trans gender (who cares)?
Etc.
Bottom line from my foxhole is that if there is a collision the Captain is at fault (the reality of command).
If there are 2 or more collisions in less than a year, than the command did not take the correct steps, they need to be fired.
Now if we could just start applying these rules to US GVT civilians.
Love to find out what exactly they know about MH370, the long-lost flight from KL to Beijing a la TWA800.
Can we also remove the actual John McCain?
