Or, string more paper clips (bare not coated). A queue of aluminum foil would also work.

The eye is heading to Orlando and will be there in a few hours. We in Brevard (East of Orlando) have had trains of rain wrapped tornados for hours and I'm lucky to still have power. If you don't hear from someone in Orlando it's probably because their power or WiFi is down. I'll be glad to see Irma go...

I have no idea how they are doing it but my brother is in Rockport, TX where Harvey made landfall and he has cell service, I talked to him the day after Harvey went through.

Out west tv local news hacks mimic the network, they report about the hurricane as if it's never happened, with fear in their eye and expressions of horror. It's pretty dramatic stuff.☺

Where are you seeing the eye heading to orlando. We’ve seen a shift slightly eastward but no mention of a north eastern turn.

Actually, the cellular system is designed to self-heal at the trunk level. Most sites have power generators.

That is something I noticed way back in ‘83 when we were doing boundary surveys for the remote repeaters. Every company operating on those sites had generators and big fuel tanks.

No, but it’s a cool tool.

Just think if we had a Free Republic channel for those rare times that FR is off line!

Amen! I don't know if it was all the media panic and warnings the past week leading up to this night that have left me feeling so unsettled and worried or if it really was a premonition of a catastrophe that, so far, we managed to escape all those years on the boat and living in Florida since 68' (except for 9 years recently in NC). But I DO know that my prayers have been for the safety of others as well as ourselves. I know it's not over yet, but I have felt a peace about it since yesterday after my husband decided we should stay put in Tampa with our two cats. Whatever the Lord was going to permit, I knew He was there with me and our lives were - as they always are - in His hands.

A lot of pain and loss has been and will be experienced by thousands of people affected by this huge storm and I will continue to pray for healing, restoration, comfort and peace as we pick up the pieces together. I am grateful for the mercy God has shown us here and the many Freepers who have prayed for those of us faced with this frightful force of nature. We are a family, there's no doubt about it.

You really can’t tell from radar but it looks as if the eye will move in between Tampa and Orlando. I’m surprised NHC hasn’t downgraded this to a cat 1 yet.

Still here. Palm Bay report. Street flooding subsiding, crown of road now visible. Still have power with occasional bumps. Wind has started shifting from easterly to southerly as storm is coming parallel. Lots of snapped branches but still in the trees. Some fencing down, taking care of what Matthew didn’t destroy. Mostly wind now. Not sure what to make of the bottom half of the storm gone from radar. I assume that means no rain but wind will still be with us. Not out of the woods yet. Ciao

“1. It’s free.
2. You can communicate with a large group at once verbally.
3. You can also set it to preserve your audio message so if someone isn’t on it or can’t get to it, they can hear it when they log on.
4. You can exchange info in real time.
5. You can also communicate by image”

Ok so number 1, it’s free. how so? Do you need a cell phone service? or can you take an Iphone 3g out of your draw and use it? if you can, you have my interest.

My experience so far seems to be much like Wilma in 2005 — howling wind and rain, annoying as hell, but never lost my electricity.

That's incredible. We live in a heavily wooded section of north-central Connecticut. When a stupid acorn falls off one of our oak trees, we lose power! (SLIGHT exaggeration)

Praying for the safety of all FReepers in Irma's path...

I’ve often thought that a Free Republic radio program or podcast would be neat. I’ve never figured out what kind of format would be right.

WESH 2’s guys are calling for the eye to go along the Orange/Lake County line (which puts Orlando in the NE quadrant). It’s headed to Winter Heaven right now and going N at 14 mph.
