Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

A little info please. We are new to the south thus hurricanes. We live in Bluffton SC, about fifteen miles inland and have been unsure what to do. Just a few minutes ago a mandatory evacuation was ordered for the Beaufort county barrier islands, at 10 am tomorrow, Hilton Head, Dafuskie, Fripp, etc but not for Bluffton. What does this mean, is the projection again up the east coast?

Should be... Upper LEVEL low.

They say it will eat away at the western portion of the Atlantic high pressure system which is currently steering Irma to the west. Only then can Irma turn north. So timing is everything.

“Getting in a car and driving east with the size of the storm seems problematic, and good luck going north.”

FWIW, my niece and hubby had good luck going north via Route 19 out of the Tampa area. That was yesterday. It took twice as long as normal, but there were services along the way. She might want to check in to that if she’s headed for Alabama. I think Rte. 19 (it’s Rte. 98, too) connects with I-10 in Tallahassee.

Yeah I can only speak to I-75, knew people coming southbound (don't ask..) and northbound was bumper-to-bumper from basically Atlanta to I-10. And gas was pretty spotty.

Follow your local statements. If your location has not been called for evacuation, then sit tight. Barrier islands and mobile homes always have evac priority.

Your point was also that it would go into the gulf and then away from FLA

No, I conceded that it would hit Southern/SW FL and then go into the Gulf and hit Southern AL/MS and possibly NOLA. Breitbart's trajectory doesn't show it going up FL anymore. I never said it was NOT going to hit FL.

I’ve said before that people get too impressed with size as far as hurricanes. Looking at that animation I see a large ragged eye and making landfall in Cuba, as far as Irma. The comparatively smaller José in behind looks more concerning to me, it’s a tight little well-organized storm with a tight little well-defined eye. Andrew could have been described in that manner.

Thanks for all the inputs everyone. My sister has made the decision to stay in Tampa for the hurricane. She is content with that decision, now.
