Looking up from my cellphone, I see them coming: a platoon clad head to toe in black, marching in formation like some sort of dystopian Roman legion. They’re carrying flags and holding shields, some embossed with the black-and-red logo of the anti-fascist movement.
As they approach the column of protesters already marching toward Berkeley City Hall, they start banging on their shields, chanting:
“Ah – anti! – Anti-fascista! Ah – anti! – Anti-fascista!”
Hundreds in the main crowd – from small children to white-haired peaceniks – join in, “Anti-fascista! Anti-fascista!”

Uh huh. I recently upgraded my Idaho CCW to the Enhanced version. In the course of the day-long class, we got a refresher on the use of lethal force in self-defense. Idaho law is quite clear on this matter. Defense against assault by these AntiFa types is entirely legitimate.
In other words, if I were with my wife (who is mildly disabled and unable to move quickly), and we were in imminent danger of physical harm from an AntiFa gang, I would be entirely justified in putting them down if they ignored repeated commands to stop.

Looking at the antifa bunch I wonder how many LEO are disguised in their ranks. Black pants/shirt/mask/hat are easy to come by to blend in to this ragtag bunch of college nerds. Someday someone will be in their midst with a puny .22 up their sleeve and no one will ever see or hear it coming.

Law enforcement can’t infiltrate left wing groups easily like they can right wing groups. Leftist groups don’t just take anyone who shows up like right wing groups tend to. They have to know someone for a long time before they can join a group like antifa. The whole lifestyle and mentality of a left wing activist is hard for a police officer or professional snitch(ie washed up criminal) to fake. Left wing politics is very much like radical Islam in this respect. You have to spend years studying and learning before you can be accepted.
One is reminded of the ancient Greek military formation known as the “phalanx”, in which a tightly bunched infantry armed with spears and shields, moved in a mass, beating about in all directions as they waded into battle.
Phalanx is derived from the Greek word phalange, meaning “finger”. The Spanish Fascists under Franco adopted the term “Falange” for their shock troops.
As much as the Antifas claim to despise Fascism, they are certainly willing to adopt the tactics and objectives of their “enemies”.
Maybe we should start referring the Antifas as the “Phalanx”.

As for "phalanx," Liddell & Scott's Intermediate Greek Lexicon says that the derivation is uncertain.
