Tagging Trump as a creation of the city's "tabloid culture," de Blasio said Trump shouldn't be mistaken for a typical New Yorker in an interview with New York Magazine

Apparently that worked for him. While there is no issue with legitimately courting the vote of some demographic, this was done with no recognition of the needs or interests of that demographic, only appealing to their fears and prejudices.
