Half of Protestants Agree With Catholics That Good Deeds and Faith Are Needed for Salvation: Pew

About half of Protestants in the U.S. now agree with the "historically Catholic belief" that both faith and good deeds are needed for salvation, rather than faith alone, a Pew Research Center survey shows.

White Evangelicals stood out as the strongest believers in faith alone, however.

Pew, which released the survey to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, explored different questions, though one of the main focuses was on the requirements for salvation.

Fifty-two percent of U.S. Protestants said both good deeds and faith in God are needed to get into heaven; 46 percent said faith alone (sola fide) is needed. Among Catholics, 81 percent agreed that both good deeds and faith are necessary. Meanwhile, two-thirds of white evangelicals said they believe faith alone is needed for salvation.

(Catholics argue that "faith and works" is a misleading oversimplification of their beliefs.)

Protestants were similarly split on the Reformation principle of sola scriptura (which means that Scripture alone is authoritative for the faith and practice of the Christian), with 46 percent saying the Bible provides all the religious guidance Christians need and 52 percent saying Christians need guidance from church teachings and traditions in addition to the Bible. Among white evangelicals, nearly 60 percent agreed with the principle of sola sciptura.

Nobody is saved yet.

So, nothing follows salvation, but the wedding feast.

“He that endures to the end, the same shall be saved”

Paul called your theory “the mystery of iniquity.”

Sorry. Sola gratia. You look perilously like a person trying to show himself saved by self-grace. Won’t work. Accept the grace of God, for there is no other grace effecting salvation.

Yet, Jesus said, “Today you shall be with Me in heaven.”

That's not what Jesus said...

And when was it written??? Before the book of Acts...

>> “Folks are in for a big surprise if they totally disregard God’s teachings.” <<
Matthew 7:21-23

[21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
[22] Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
[23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Torah is a comprehensive test that no mortal will pass here.

To show only elements of Torah in a life is still to fail that test.

Reject grace and you have no right to complain of the result.

In a way I feel sorry for folks like that.

They think they are saved. Nope.

They’ve had access, and were able to study for themselves.

What a shame.

Stealing the spouse of someone is like killing half of them.

What God has brought together, let no man put asunder. (paraphrased)

I agree.

I’m not proud of not doing all that I know to be right.

It’s a real struggle. It isn’t that God asks too much. It’s that I am not as strong as I should be. I’m being charitable to myself, but you know what I mean.

The key word is never.

We don’t have a case of insufficient works but of an absence of salvation backing them. You can go to hell in a pew.

Let God show charity to you. And then it will show through your life to others.

You really can’t read, can you!

Stop trying to be God, you don’t qualify.

Faith, and only faith is the criterion.

Salvation is not something that happens in this life; it comes at the Last Trump.

The word doesn’t say Grace can save; it says that through Faith we are saved at that day.

Salvation is literally the body that can live in the realm of Yehova. That is what Yeshua explained to Nicodemus, no matter how hard you may try to twist it.

Even murderers can meet salvation — they thereby become ex-murderers.

Jesus sets the threshold for murder pretty low. Hate your neighbor (not what he did, but the neighbor himself) in your heart? Cut him down gratuitously? Murder.

I agree.

We need to get right with the Lord. He will help us. He has promised to do so.

It is my belief that part of Satan’s complaint was that God asked too much. It just wasn’t fair. It was impossible!

Part of God’s vindication will be this (purely my opinion).

Those who have died in Christ will rise up forgiven of their sins to be taken with God to sin no more.

Those who are alive when Christ comes back, will be saved as they are. Some will still be imperfect but trying.

My perception is that there will be very troubling times just before Christ returns. Christians will be persecuted much like early Christians were.

It is my perception that during this trial by fire, those who remain faithful to the teachings of God despite them, may in fact become perfect in God’s eyes.

They will not have earned their salvation, as only Jesus could provide that having never sinned, but I wonder if God won’t be vindicated by these people who have chosen to live Godlike lives in their trial by fire.

Food for thought, but I am not trying to convince others of this. What comes will come, and it matters not to me if this is fanciful or reality, only in that what serves God most is what I would hope for.

Stop your own arrant ranting.

Paul the former killer had the mind of Christ — he accepted it finally.

So do I.

Stop your blaspheming.

I look at my life and know God has been merciful.

In my life here, I try to be kind to others.

I’m a bit of a pest here. “:^)

I think the way to term it is this.

Jesus sets the threshold of our hearts, very high.

He knew the man on the cross was speaking from his.

He was expressing belief, faith, and repentance.

I agree that you don’t have to commit murder to be guilty of it.

It’s why I advocate for the death penalty when someone shoots another person with intent to kill. They committed the act.

>> “And it’s true too that when saved we will begin to “work it out” with ‘fear and trembling’ “ <<

You are rewriting the word to your own imagination.

Phl 2:12

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Obedience is the only way, and we don't "begin to be saved." We begin to follow his commandments "with fear and trembling."

Salvation is the event that ends the tribulation, and the kingdoms of men.

We don't work anything out after our salvation; we return to Earth with Yeshua to rule with him for 1000 years.

Teaching you, the ignorant, the word of Yehova is not blasphemy.

Blasphemy is your puffy arrogance, thinking you can rewrite the word for your own convenience.

You do it constantly.

You seem to think you’re some kind of re-interpreter; you are not. The word is to be read and heard, not twisted, changed, nor used lightly.

Salvation happens the moment we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are already saved when we return with Christ at the end of the Tribulation. It is so sad that you are not as smart as we had hoped you would be.
