Defense Secretary James Mattis on Sunday issued a stark warning to North Korea, saying the country would be met with a "massive military response" if it threatened the U.S. or its allies.
"Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam or our allies will be met with a massive military response," Mattis said in a statement outside of the White House after meeting with President Trump.
"Kim Jong Un should take heed the United Nations Security Council's unified voice. All members unanimously agreed on the threat North Korea poses. And they remain unanimous in their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Because we are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely, North Korea," he continued.
Mattis said the U.S. had "many military options" regarding the Korean peninsula, and that the president wanted to be briefed on all of them.
Mattis's aggressive, holiday-weekend statement comes hours after North Korean state media announced the country had successfully tested a miniaturized hydrogen bomb capable of fitting on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The move is a show of defiance against Washington and the international community.
The UN Security Council unanimously voted last month to impose sanctions on Pyongyang after the country launched a series of ICBMs.
The council announced it would be having an emergency meeting to discuss the developments.
The Defense secretary's statement matches President Trump's recent hawkish statements regarding North Korea.
Trump strongly condemned Pyongyang's actions, saying the U.S. was considering imposing sanctions on North Korea's trade partners.

Well said. A fungus could not have said it better, but then again, fungi cannot talk—unless they are “talking” to other fungi.
What did boxes of rocks ever do to even deserve that remark.
I agree.
The only question is whether we wait for Pyongyang to strike someplace first (in which case Beijing will ‘remain neutral’) or hit the pre-emptively based on a threat (in which case China will join in the fun).
My question is why is it that for years it’s been well known that our electrical grid is extremely vulnerable to an EMP attack. To my knowledge this vulnerability has never been addressed. Mind boggling.
Also, hope our side has the rare earth metals problem worked out before China cuts us off. It’s only a problem because of inside the Beltway foolishness, btw.
“Trumans fault...”
And Eisenhower’s, and Kennedy’s. and Let’s be Jolly’s, and Nixon’s, and Ford’s, and Farter’s, and Reagan’s, and Boosh 1’s, and Slick’s, and Boosh II’s, and Obola’s! Did I leave anyone out?
“Once again President Trump has to clean up the Clintons mess.”
NO, he’s got to clean up every president’s mess since Harry Assed Truman!
Hey - isn’t that the cleaning lady!
Never forget that. As they say: the jokes write themselves.
It seems the North Korean people haven’t the first clue about the rest of the world...They are kept in the dark about “civilization”....They think their “Dear Leader” is protecting them from the cruel world...Not much different than when the old Soviet Union showed clips on news TV programs of old Elliot Ness “Untouchables” 1930’s car driveby shootings as actual news from the corrupt USA...
Eisenhower accepted the armistice instead of a peace agreement.
Kim does not believe the Trump Administration will do anything more that huff & puff. We are all waiting to see what does and does not actually happen.
If we move from repeated warnings into sustained combat, we need to ask ahead of time which of our allies is ready to fight with us? I expect Trump’s Generals are already doing that and more.
lets warn them and do sanctions another 20 years till they have hundreds of ICBMs capable of reaching every part of the the US.
And you watch how quickly all the “memorial statues and pictures” of the Kim’s vanish when the little grunt is gone. They will make civil war generals look like kid’s play!
Once NK has made enough noise to become the center of military scrutiny, and become completely surrounded, Iran will nuke Tel-Aviv. That is how chess works.
My concern is not the North Koreans so much.
It’s China’s reaction if we have to use tactical nukes to stop a 2 million man North Korean Army invasion of Soul as the Dictator has openly threatened to do. Word is the the North Koreans have tunneled their way to Soul.
Anyhow, if China gets upset with us firing tactical nukes to close to China or Beijing, then I guess thermo-nuclear war with China?
the Norks just lobbed a missile over Hokkaido. Isnt that a threat to a U.S. ally?
***********
He is lobbing single missiles now, but will soon be capable of launching multiple missiles anywhere he wants. The problem will only get worse if we don’t deal with it now.

I hear she can’t even cook a decent brisket!
Not enough...
Sometimes you have to put up with things like this though.
“:^)
Well, that’s an alarming game-changer....
Stalin refused to show pictures of the Depression era because even in the US during that time the poor and destitute had cars.
We should make an announcement that from this day on if you want to trade with the US (and other countries that sign on) you can not trade with NK. Your choice. Second we should tell Taiwan, Japan and South Korea to nuke up...something that will freak out China. Third deploy missile defense in depth and warn NK any more missile launches over South Korea, Japan, etc, will be shot down. Then sit back.
