Germany achieved a near record budget surplus of €18.3bn (£16.8bn) in the first half of 2017, according to government figures released on Friday.

The timing of the figures could not be better for Angela Merkel, who is seeking a fourth term as chancellor in elections next month.

The surplus is the second largest Germany has recorded since reunification in 1990.p

I've always wondered how many hours I've worked in my lifetime to defend countries other than the United States. The total should be 0 hours, but I suspect it's in the thousands of hours.

I'd like to spend a lot less time involuntarily helping out "less fortunate" people, both domestic and foreign. Unfortunately, it looks like the only way I can do that is to spend less time working overall.

It’s roughly 1% of their government budget, which consumes about 50% of their GDP, a huge amount by our standards (though they have socialized medicine and free college education)

So it’s basically a balanced budget. Imagine how much bigger the surplus would have been without the billions spent on the rapefugees.

I’m sure they will reelect Merkel and use it to import more cultural enrichment.

I don’t believe Germany truly has a surplus. Their welfare load has increased considerably. Of course, this could be the wealth it is stealing from other European countries.
