Various ^ | 8/26/2017 | Various

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with “a cargo trailer halfway in the building.” Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.

Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Latest on Tropical Depression Harvey (all times local): 9:10 p.m.

State officials say floodwaters from Harvey toppled two oil storage tanks in south Texas, spilling almost 30,000 gallons of crude.

Burlington Resources Oil and Gas reported the spills in DeWitt County to the Texas Railroad Commission on Wednesday. They include a 16,170-gallon (385 barrels) spill near the town of Westhoff and a 13,272 gallon (316 barrels) spill west of Hochheim. That’s an area about 150 miles west of Houston.

Lots of money to be made in the remodeling/construction industry. I would venture to say the damage exceeds $500 billion.

IF there’s a problem, I wonder how fast ACE can get those guys back to shoot more expandable foam into the eroded voids, as they did in 2009?

Piny point is a couple miles down stream..why would the closest station to the DAM at west belt drive remain steady but the one further downstream rise a foot?

Cute story behind that pic (if it’s not ‘fake news’).

Normally illegal Mexicans would be doing that work.
Mexico would come out ahead if it paid for all of Texas’ wall for letting it’s workers do this one job.
Anyway, it’s a dynamic to watch.

I am a bit bummed that my “gun nut” hunter / close neighbor has moved to another state. We live not too far from the New Madrid Fault, for one.

Shoot (no pun intended), there’s no way I could afford 1/4 of his ammo stash, alone.

This is a bit north of Beaumont. Wide open might be 60,000 CFS (the present inflow).

“I would venture to say the damage exceeds $500 billion.”

Insurance industry estimates 10-20 billion in Texas.

“JPMorgan told its clients Hurricane Harvey’s cost could be $10 billion to $20”

that would barely cover the automobiles. 500,000 cars X $30,000= $15,000,000,000. now lets count the houses and the infrastructure.

It was VERY interesting watching the local ABC13 coverage / news, at (IIRC) 5 pm today, followed by ABC National News. ABC13was showing a great many things, but overall with a take that the worst was over, at least in terms of ongoing flooding, and that in some areas, cleanup was already in progress.

The National Newscast was totally sensationalized - you’d think SE Texas had been demolished by scores of large nukes. Or, maybe it was Atlantis, fait accompli.

Katrina was $125 Billion. This may be a bit larger:

BTW, this thread could probably use a little humor for a moment, so, totally OT:

This evening, I stopped by a large (they are in a former Wal-Mart) farm supply store, to pick up a little chain. It was near closing time, and the salesman assisting me got a call on his walkie-talkie, asking him if his “zone” was clear yet. He responded, sounding a bit harried: “No, I have a customer back here, in chains.”

I was chuckling all the way home.

The 500,000 figure was the upper end of a 300,000 to 500,000 range, estimated by the Cox automotive group with no real analysis, just “let’s take hurricane Sandy figures and double it”. Also, the average covered value of each vehicle under comprehensive would be more like a depreciated $12,000 minus deductible. And 50% of vehicles have no comprehensive coverage at all. Like I said, this is an insurance industry estimate of exposure.

Because X different computer models converged and said it would get a foot deeper.

I think their instrumentation is questionable. They indicate a 9000 cfs flow in a two mile wide warned flow. They are outside of the sweet spot for direct measurement, indeed, sensors are failing due to record levels. I doubt their computer models, getting fed data from iffy sensors, are in the prime range for computation. I suspect they aren’t sure which sensors or models to trust.

But look. We know this flood exceeds Tax Day. We know they’re releasing around 10% of what’s coming into Barker Addick. We know more yet is going around the ends. Bottom line...there’s a huge pile of water above the dams, more than they can hold, it is all going to come down the Bayou, and it is not under human control at this point.

News reports have some of the people from Orange Texas going to the Lake Charles Civic Center (which is about 30 miles away).

I do not think that this center if filled yet...
