Agriculture has contributed nearly as much to climate change as deforestation by intensifying global warming, according to U.S. research that has quantified the amount of carbon taken from the soil by farming.
Some 133 billion tons of carbon have been removed from the top two meters of the earth's soil over the last two centuries by agriculture at a rate that is increasing, said the study in PNAS, a journal published by the National Academy of Sciences.
The 133 billion tons of carbon lost from soil compares to about 140 billion tons lost due to deforestation, he said, mostly since the mid-1800s and the Industrial Revolution.
But the findings show potential for the earth's soil to mitigate global warming by absorbing more carbon through such practices as better land stewardship, more extensive ground cover to minimize erosion, better diversity of crop rotation and no-till farming, he said.

Boycott Agriculture!
So maybe the Nazis were just enriching the environment and replenishing the soil with carbon from all them big oven thingys, eh?
The beat goes on..
The Grapes of Wrath have taken root.. in the media.
Destitute, desperate, delusional and demented..
Climate Change? We should be so lucky.
Damn you agriculture and your nefarious food growing!
If you are a true global warming believer, and NOT just a poser, then you must boycott agriculture. The only serious way to boycott big Ag is to stop eating!
Do not be a poser, do your part to end the scourge of global warming!
Kill farmers!!!!
Sounds like the world has a few billion too many people. If you are a true global warming believer, you need to personally act upon your beliefs.
Here’s a gun with a bullet in it. Do the honorable thing.
we are at 400 ppm- in the past we were at 1200 ppm- life survived just fine-
Man’s CO2 amounts to just 0.00136% of the atmosphere- that’s it- there is NO WAY 0.00136% of the atmosphere is capable of capturing and holding enough heat to warm the globe- No way at all- there simply is not enough man produced CO2 to do so- period- the numbers don’t lie-
And besides- warming ALWAYS precedes the rise of CO2... by EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS or more- Hey NASA- please tell us how CO2 is causing temperatures to rise again if CO2 only rises AFTER temperatures do?
Despite rising CO2 levels the past 20 years- temperatures have NOT risen- again proving that CO2 does NOT drive warming-
The earth isn’t going to spontaneously combust - life will continue to thrive- man isn’t producing even a smidgen of the amount of CO2 that would be necessary to trap heat and raise temps enough to be concerned about it-Even if we increased the total amount of man produced CO2 100 fold, it still wouldn’t be enough-
Sadly though the propganda of the left is having a major impact on gullible people who are too lazy to do the work necessary to investigate the wild claims of climate alarmists
It seems we don’t have enough liberal giving up eating, driving, or warming and cooling their homes.
Imagine the impact if 50 million American libs lived what they preach?
Well....no global temperature impact, but more freedom for real Americans....
Is there a renegade AS (artificially stupid computer) cranking out these articles?
If you a true global warming denier and NOT just an obnoxious asshole, then you must have loved and yearn for the dust bowl days.
Tourism to commie areas contributes much more. Midwesterners, stop sightseeing in western states, and keep the food at home for an extra month. See how they like that.
And every Field of corn is a huge carbon sink. Many farms , in fact, remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they release.
Well, thank goodness all my food comes from the grocery store! That way I am not contributing to any of that nasty global warming by getting my food from farms!!!
a good excuse to quit eating my veggies
What we need to do is collectivize all of the farms. That way we can apply the largest scientific principles from Comrade Lysenko to maximize yield and cut CO2 emissions.
Well played sir!
the amount of carbon taken from the soil by farming.
Some 133 billion tons of carbon have been removed from the top two meters of the earth’s soil over the last two centuries
aren’t we supposed to lose carbon... to save the planet... why are we trying to reduce our carbon footprint,
i think this lie has gone circular.
