The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 21st, 2017 | By Nancy Youssef in Washington and Jake Maxwell Watts in Singapore

The U.S. Navy announced an “operational pause” and has begun a broad investigation after the destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel, leaving 10 sailors still missing, the second such incident in as many months.

The response by the U.S. military signals the Navy believes it needs to examine whether there may be institutional problems behind the deadly collisions.

Navy Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, made the announcement about the operational pause during a nearly four-minute video message posted on Facebook Monday morning. Adm. Richardson said he also ordered a broader investigation.

“I directed an operational pause be taken in all of our fleets around the world,” Adm. Richardson said. “I want our fleet commanders to get together with their leaders and their commands to ensure that we are taking all appropriate immediate actions to ensure safe and effective operations around the world.”

That is funny, but unfortunately, true.

“Navy to Pause Operations, Review Collisions, With 10 Missing”

No big mystery here. This is what you get when you don’t get the best and succumb to political correctness, ie. affirmative action, transgenders, gays, women etc. God help us if the Navy has to go into action, these ships can’t even get out of their own way, It is a shame what is going on in the armed services.

You mean, you mean to say, sir, that that is in doubt? Those actions should have been in place, say, thirty, sixty years ago and not deviated from.

Where in my post did I say he didn’t ??????

BTW JOOD’s qualifying for OOD did in fact, give Rudder and Speed orders under the SUPERVISION of the OOD

I didn’t say you did. But somehow there is a general impression that somehow our ships are steaming around under automated controls and the anti-collision programs were hacked. As you point out, the anti-collision device is an OOD / conning officer who orders courses and speeds to avoid a collision - he may have a lot of help and back-up, but from beginning to end, it’s on the OOD.

A standard 243 years old took but 8 years to destroy.

The very idea that the sole criteria for a CO is competence and fidelity has been supplanted with “multiple factors”.

And it’s trickled down.

Sadly, the “operational pause” here isn’t about ascertaining equipment safety (as with aircraft that might have a material defect), but rather to avoid embarrassing “operator errors” that expose systemic rot.

I should have written “spouses” instead of “wives” in my previous post. I tend to default to thinking in terms of traditional ways and roles, but there may also be husbands of course, even stationed on the base.

More diversity training will solve the problem.
A second drone crashed in Afghanistan. A drone crashes!! Are these crashes related.
Forgot Russian hacking of election machines. Our weapon systems have been hacked.

That is what is more disturbing to me. If ships were being hacked or navigation systems were failing, etc., those are problems that can be solved by fixing technology.

If the problem is due to poor training and poor leadership, and the causes of that poor training and poor leadership are not going to go away because of their protected class (and the inbred inertia of bureaucracy) then the outlook is dismal.

If we get into a shooting war in this state, we are going to lose, and lose badly. Doesn’t mean we can’t rebound under wartime conditions which will drive change of necessity, but...simply trying to change it with the same root causes staying entrenched isn’t going to fix it in peacetime.

I absolutely agree with you and I am also absolutely convinced that the cancer of the Obama years and Democratic Party meddling in the military and socializing the military and advancing top officers based on them being liberals and firing GOOD officers who would not kow tow to them is behind all this!!!!

It will take ten years minimum to clean this mess up. Meanwhile they should save money and tie the ships to the dock!

“””This is what you get when you don’t get the best and succumb to political correctness, ie. affirmative action, transgenders, gays, women etc”””

I believe the problem is this.

The Navy has forbidden anyone on the bridge to look at the AIS Transponder information on ships surrounding them because the word ‘transponder’ is micro-agressive and sexist towards transgenders, transsexuals, transvestites, ladyboys, and any other screwy sexual combination you can think of.

The CNO made the announcement about the operational pause

I agree! One collision is one huge mistake, two collisions is an operational and/or training mistake.

Patroits are screaming - USN - get your act together! You are embarrassing our Nation.

The military has a made it clear that “minorities” cannot fail training programs.

I knew a female that supposedly passed a space system school that asked on her first day on the job after school, “What’s the difference between an uplink and a downlink?” She was spoon fed answers to exams to ensure she passed.

I can only imagine some minority on the bridge asking, “What’s a latitude?”

It is past time to get the “doers” back in charge and the “talkers” out of the way. Political correctness is getting our people KILLED. This goes for ALL services.

My daughter went to a recruiter in 2010. They were trying to get her into Nuclear Engineering. When I asked the recruiter about OCS he said that of the officers that did not come in through ROTC, 95% came from the fleet. So, if your college did not have naval ROTC, you were pretty much screwed. Then he went back to talking about Nuclear Engineering. (My daughter had strong math skills.)

Back in the day it was similar when I tried to get into the Navy. It was almost the exact same speech. Its too bad they did not give that speech in high school-—it would have changed my college plans.

AIS Transponder information on ships surrounding them

This entire line is a distraction. You don't need AIS info to know the course and speed of a merchant ship at sea that is within a range where a collision could evenatuate. You can see it with your own eyeballs and maneuver to avoid, and the OOD has exactly that duty and function. BTDT and I never hit anything and I managed to assiduously hit nothing without technical aids to tell me not to hit this thing filling half the sky with its bulk. It just isn't that hard.
