Confederate monument stands on Chicago's South Side as questions swirl around the country

While a national debate over Confederate symbols in the U.S. rages this week, a monument on Chicago's South Side commemorating the deaths of 4,000 Confederate soldiers stands largely unnoticed.

At Oak Woods Cemetery in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, the 30-foot granite monument, called Confederate Mound, marks the mass grave of soldiers captured and held at Camp Douglas, where many died of smallpox and cholera.

Topped by a bronze statue of a Confederate infantry soldier, arms folded across his chest, the monument was dedicated in 1895, with President Grover Cleveland and an estimated 100,000 people attending.

Unlike many other statues commemorating the Confederacy, this monument's placement in a private cemetery puts it alongside some of the nation's most prominent African-Americans, including anti-lynching crusader Ida B. Wells, Olympic hero Jesse Owens, gospel music pioneer Thomas Dorsey and Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington.

The Rev. James Dukes, of Liberation Christian Center, a South Side church, said that juxtaposition is a "healthy example" of how people should recognize "a past that is long passed."

"We can't erase the Civil War. We can't erase the fact that there was a Confederacy and a Union," he said. "But at the same time, those type of monuments acknowledge the fact that Harold Washington could become the mayor of Chicago because of the victory that took place over the Confederacy."

"I don't see it as a contradiction or a disrespect," Dukes said.

Instead, the monument should serve as a reflection of what black Americans went through during the Civil War and the Jim Crow era, he said.

However, while the monument is relatively obscure, its ornate nature and its origins may raise questions about its appropriateness, one historian said.

I suspect the questions swirling around the country. I've been to many civil war battlefields and monuments, mostly in the south, and have never heard these swirling questions. Either there, or when talking about the visits later, with Yankees.

The Chicago Tribune is helpfully directing attention to markers most people in Chicongo did not know where there.
Now they can destroy them.

“Instead, the monument should serve as a reflection of what black Americans went through during the Civil War and the Jim Crow era, he said.”

It’s all part of history and history means something different to everyone.

Slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow, and the passing of Civil Rights Acts should be remembered, but all of that can be remembered in books and other writings as well.

“...the deaths of 4,000 Confederate soldiers...”

And Each one of those 4000 Confederate Soldiers is worth more than 100,000 of the worthless feces slugs on the Left.

The history books have been rewritten by Commies for years
which is why most Millenials are ignoramuses
then again why wouldn’t the left want to obfuscate the sordid
history of segregation and the KKK which are all
Democratic constructs.
Now run along to StinkProgress where you belong troll

The history of the slavery, the Civil War, the KKK, Jim Crow and the need to pass the Civil Rights Act is out there. And the names and parties who were responsible are attached and cannot be unattached.

We should address the question of how many of those dirty poor Southern boys owned slaves, and were fighting to keep those slaves they didn’t own?

How many poor Northern boys didn’t give a tinker’s damn about the slaves, and were not on some moral crusade to liberate them?

Just like any war, there were young men who faced each other across battlefields, urinating on themselves and seeing another face, much like their own and wondering if the cause they were fighting for was just.

A strange remark, although I confess I had no idea that it, or indeed the cemetery itself, even existed. A quick visit to Google Maps can bring you right up to date, and give you a clear idea of the location and situation of the monument, and it is indeed in close proximity to the grave site of Harold Washington, but by no means "crowding it". ( It's across the road behind some trees. )

I can't see it as "ornate", so I wonder what that's supposed to mean ... probably "tall" or "prominent".

“..how many of those dirty poor Southern boys owned slaves...”

Most of them didn’t.

“...How many poor Northern boys didn’t give a tinker’s damn about the slaves...”

Most of THEM didn’t either.

I’m reminded of Shelby Foote’s recounting of a comment from a Southern soldier, who had been captured, when asked “Why are you fighting to keep slaves?”

“Slaves? I don’t nothing about slaves.”

“So why are you fighting, then?”

“Because you’re down here.”

I’d imagine most of those Boys in Grey thought much the same way.

Exactly. And if you destroy history, you can rewrite it so the reason was EXCLUSIVELY about slavery and thereby vilify the South completely and give moral relevance to destroying all vestiges of it, to include war graves, national parks and eventually this all leads to the destruction of anything associated with white men, good or bad.

I accept that many our national heroes had foibles. But I will not accept the destruction of their successes in spite of their human shortcomings.

How does it compare with the camp up in Wisconsin, the monument of which I was reading about earlier today.

Yankees? Whites are all evil, all because of slavery. The Yankees fighting for the North is meaningless because they were mostly evil whites.

I hear no mention of the sacrifice of the whites that fought for the North against the South, if the Civil War was all about slavery those whites should be heroes now, but alas they are not. The Union Army is being erased as surely as the Confederacy, has to be when if is a race issue. When BLM unleashes violence on white people or Antifa does it in their behalf do they ask them if their ancestors fought for the North or the South before attacking them? No because they don’t care. They have made this a black vs white issue, they are only beginning with the Confederate monuments because they know that is an easier target, better talking points.

Now it is all about evil racist (all) whites and enslaved(all) blacks. No one else.

Destroying Confederate monuments doesn’t bother some people because they can find some justification for it- Confederates owned slaves (ignoring that most did not and those that did own slaves that were no part of the Confederacy) Confederacy was another country that fought the US and lost, but there was this thing called reconciliation that people want to ignore.

Whether or not people think there is at least some justification for removing Confederate statues, please be aware that is only the beginning. The talking points have already been starting about removing monuments to slave holders in general...many happen to be our founding fathers. If all whites are racist what about those that signed the Constitution? They will go there, yes they will. Make no mistake they really want to erase whites, all whites.

I have never heard of controversy about the Confederate monuments either until it became a left talking point. They were all considered pieces of our history, which is what they are.

The thing is in the big picture of liberal things this isn’t really about the blacks either, the liberals have proven by their deeds they don’t care about blacks. This is just another talking point to further the liberal agenda, bring us closer to destruction so they can rebuild this country to suit them.
