A new Marist poll finds that 62% of Americans believe statues of Confederate leaders should be allowed to stand. Whats more, a majority of self-identified Soft Democrats say Confederate monuments should remain.
The survey of 1,125 adults (at least 18 years of age), conducted August 14-15, 2017 and sponsored in collaboration with NPR and PBS NewsHour, asked:
Do you think statues honoring leaders of the Confederacy should?
Results for Independent respondents mirrored that of all respondents, while Democrats favored removing the statues and Republicans were strongly in favor of preserving them:
Remain as a historical symbol:
Total: 62%
Democrats: 44%
Republicans: 86%, Independents: 61%
Be removed because they are offensive to some people:
Total: 27%
Democrats: 47%,
GOP: 6%,
Independents: 27%
Unsure:
Total: 11%,
Democrats: 9%,
Republicans: 8%,
Independents: 12%
Among Soft Democrats, 52% said the statues should remain, while only 33% said they should be removed (15% unsure).
Strong Democrats favored removal, 57%-34%, with 9% unsure.
For the GOP, both strong (88%) and soft (86%) Republicans favored retaining the statutes honoring Confederate leaders, mirroring their overall average of 86%.
Watch all the spineless Republicans change their tune when they become aware of the polling.
I don’t know we’ll see.
I would love to see 62% of Americans support the abolition of public schools.
Public schools are an abomination.
Parents of public schooled children are the vein by which toxins are fed.
Horace Mann - may he and his feral ilk burn in hell.
DC.
NYC.
Boston.
Chicago.
Seattle.
L.A.
S.F.
And 38 per cent are ignorant and anti American.
Everyone I’m talking to cannot believe what is happening. So how are the statues coming down if “most” of the people want them to remain? I’m about to go park myself in a comfy chair beside the nearest memorial ... 12 gauge, my Yeti and my Kindle.
So what happens to the very popular civil war reenactments? Will they be outlawed?
Doesn’t matter. Remember when the majority were against gay marriage? Yeah ... how’d that hold up in the courts?
My mother is appalled and is not a DJT fan. When I go to see her she’s watching Colbert and I say “turn it off while I’m here” and she does. She could not believe her eyes watching the statues being removed in Baltimore over night.
Well I think it’s because gays are American citizens and starting filing lawsuits for equal treatment with state issued marriage license. I don’t know if a court would demand a statue being removed if the majority of a city or state wanted it to remain. Then again...the kings in robes.
My comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but yeah, those kings in robes don't care much about rule of law it seems. Too many of them like to legislate from the bench.
