There's a massive amount of commentary today on the drive to remove monuments related to the Confederacy. Statues of generals, political leaders, and prominent citizens during that period in history are coming down all over the South following the violence in Charlottesville. Monuments that remind local citizens of their ancestors who died in the Civil War are also being removed.
In truth, Charlottesville is an excuse to do what activists have wanted to do for decades; remove every last reminder that there was, at one time, an independent nation on the American continent based on the idea that humans could be bought and sold like animals. President Trump said as much yesterday:

In Mechanicsville VA is a monument put up by veterans of a Wisconsin unit to their war dead.
Removing all Civil War monuments won’t satisfy those intent on erasing history.
After they finish with Civil War monuments, they will go after the founders.
Why not dig them up and cook their bones.....WTF are these fools doing????

A friend of mine, who is an Army historian, said that since Congress declared veterans of the Confederate Army as US veterans, the destruction of their graves would be a War Crime under international law.
This is the insanity of the left...and primarily led by black activists... once again airing their anger their community still sees their issues as being everyone else’s fault.
Their victimhood mentality just rages on and on and on.....instead of ‘doing’ something constructive in their communities they continue to ‘destroy’.....
There’s a reason people don’t move into black communites and they keep displaying time and again why that is so.
Soon will be mass burnings of books about the Civil War.

the first thing they did in South Africa was to attack the universities, removing all the plaques and statues for anyone who accomplished anything there.
they did it with fire and chisels and paint.
they obliterate your past, your sense of belonging and then you have been psychologically prepared to be physically eliminated, permanently.

Federal Law, 1957 made all Confed Army, Navay or other soldiers veterans, and law of Feb. 1929 direct to erect headstones & recognize Confederate grave sites as US grave sites.

What we are seeing is little different than the Red Guard movement that was part of Mao’s cultural revolution in the mid 1960s. The Red Guards routinely destroyed historic and cultural icons that did not comply with Mao’s version of history or were deemed anti revolutionary.
There is a small island, Johnsons Island, in the Sandusky bay of Lake Erie. It was a prison camp used during the civil war for confederate OFFICERS. They were exposed to the brutal winter elements, starved, ravaged by disease and in humane treatment and basically left to die, which more than 200 did, none made it home. There are small grave markers, which have fallen apart. After the war, the southern families asked for their remains to be returned to the south, which was denied. The families even wanted to come get them but was not allowed.
After taking down Confederate statues, moving the tombstones of Confederate war dead may be next
