Byrd was actually an Exalted Cyclops in the Klan (crazy title, eh?). And what he said about blacks was absolutely disgusting. Any Republican who said 1/10 of what Byrd said would have been banished from public life permanently.

The Memphis thing was already tried in 2015 after the Roof shooting, and failed. The Tennessee Heritage Act prevents its removal, and that law is no more going to be repealed today than it was in 2015. The Governor knows that too, which is why he's impotently bleating, knowing full well he won't have to do anything more. "Well, I said something, law's the law, darn."

How exactly does removing Nathan Bedford Forrest's statue from the bank of the Mississippi River in Memphis, obtain literacy, employment, liberty, financial mobility, affordable housing, better schools, affordable medical care, family stability, or any opportunity for those who are need of such?
The facts are it does not, will not, cannot, and was never meant to do so for those being led to think so by those who are pulling the strings behind the curtain.
