A Canadian sniper set what appears to be a record, picking off an ISIS fighter from some 2.2 miles away, and disrupting a potentially deadly operation by the terror group in Iraq.
Shooting experts say the fatal shot at a world-record distance of 11,316 feet underscores how stunningly sophisticated military snipers are becoming. The feat, pulled off by a special forces sniper from Canada’s Joint Task Force 2, smashed the previous distance record for successful sniper shots by some 3,280 feet, a record set by a British sniper.
The new record was set using a McMillan TAC-50, a .50-caliber weapon and the largest shoulder-fired firearm in existence. It has more than 13,000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, driving a 750 grain bullet more than 3100 feet per second.

Ok, then. So make that 11,316 divided by 1,454 (height of ESB) = 7.7 Empire State Buildings
The bullet got there in 10 seconds. In 10 seconds, sound would only go 2.13 miles, not the full 2.2 miles. So the bullet beats sound in this case.
2.2 miles = 2.2 x 5,280 (feet in a mile) = 11,616 feet

Still, those guys are far better shots than we are.
No kidding, I have shot with some tier 1 snipers. Truly amazing. In my old age I have become less enthralled with being overgunned. A 338 Lapua just isn’t fun to shoot for me anymore. When I was in my 20’s I didn’t mind but putting 20 or so rounds downrange was a sure stiff shoulder the next day.
Don’t forget, they use the metric system up there, so it is nearly a decampire state building

What kind of scope can allow you to see accurately out to 2.2 miles? The bullet and rifle amaze me less than the ability to see out that far and put cross-hairs on a human (or any other target) at that distance.
My Mildot Master is so old school.
The guy was from my regiment. He was 3PPCLI and I was 2PPCLI. 2nd battalion is 2nd to none heh. As soon at this happened, my buddy from 3rd texted me and told me this. He was trying to run it in, but 2nd still has many more records. I also told him shots like this are pure blind luck. At that range, your target wouldn’t even be in your scope. You’d have to pick something to aim off. I’ve used the same platform, and like another poster said, there’s so many variables.
I will still give a hat tip to my regimental brother though,and then remind him that 2nd are still the dirty Patricia’s heh.
We’ll never know. Kyle protected troops in more urban environments but per the movie, took out an enemy sniper from about 1-1/4 miles away.
