Canadian sniper sets world record with 2.2-mile pickoff of ISIS fighter

A Canadian sniper set what appears to be a record, picking off an ISIS fighter from some 2.2 miles away, and disrupting a potentially deadly operation by the terror group in Iraq.

Shooting experts say the fatal shot at a world-record distance of 11,316 feet underscores how stunningly sophisticated military snipers are becoming. The feat, pulled off by a special forces sniper from Canada’s Joint Task Force 2, smashed the previous distance record for successful sniper shots by some 3,280 feet, a record set by a British sniper.

The new record was set using a McMillan TAC-50, a .50-caliber weapon and the largest shoulder-fired firearm in existence. It has more than 13,000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, driving a 750 grain bullet more than 3100 feet per second.

This sniper probably used to fill his deer permit without ever leaving the balcony of his downtown Toronto apartment, eh!

He used a rifle and scope that cost about the price of a Cadillac. He had a spotter of extreme skill and perhaps a bit of gods hand in guiding the bullet.

Good shooting Mr. Canuck.

So many factors come into play at that distance, variable wind speeds and directions, the up or down angle of the shot, the rotation of the earth, the bullets spin drift, the air pressure, air temperature, the temperature of your gun powde, humidity, lot to lot inconsistencies in your gun powder, cases, bullets, primers, etc, a clean bore vs a fouled bore. Everything matters at that distance.

I wonder how far the shots were that killed folks at the University of Texas in 1966? Not just in length but factoring the distance downward from the Tower? He was picking off people that were literally blocks away.

Yep. Old news. I guess the Canadians just wanted to rub it in again if they are reprinting this old news.

Different than Kyle. Chris specialized in protecting troops from ambush in urban environments, not so much open country shooting. That said I wouldn’t want to be Chris’s target in any environment. BTW Chris generally used a 300 Win Mag, the Canuck used a 50 cal. Difference between an SUV and a monster truck.

I’d read that Kyle preferred the .338 Lapua. At least that’s what I remember from his book.

Dang! And I was congratulating myself on 4 “hits” in a row, first try, on an old repellent can @ 30 ft., when I tried out my new 4” barrel CO2 BB pistol!

I’m glad this guy (and weapon) are on our side.

(I’ll bet I can’t do it again!!)

True he used both during his tours. Not sure about when he used either; there seems to be some confusion regarding the timing. Some of the images claim he is holding his CO’s “300 Win Mag” some claim, including in his book(as I recall), a 338. I think it most likely was the weapons evolved and he changed as one grew on him. I guess a 338 would be like a mud truck and a 50 would still be the monster truck.
