In 1958, at the urging of Governor Marvin Griffin, the Georgia legislature approved a measure to purchase Stone Mountain for $1,125,000. In 1963, Walker Hancock was selected to complete the carving, and work began in 1964. The carving was completed by Roy Faulkner, who later operated a museum (now closed) on nearby Memorial Drive commemorating the carving’s history. The carving was considered complete[7] on March 3, 1972.
A proposal was made to remove the Confederate carving from Stone Mountain Park.[14] However, according to Georgia state law, no one is allowed to alter the figures carved upon the stone face. Any changes within the state park would require approval by the state legislature.[15]
On October 11, 2015, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the park is considering a proposal of a permanent “Freedom Bell” honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and the line “Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia” as part of King’s “I Have A Dream” speech of 1963.[16] The proposed monument is inspired by a bell-ringing ceremony held in 2013 honoring the 50th anniversary of King’s speech.

Are the Germans going to destroy all evidence of the death camps? Why destroy history and allow it to happen again? Why are the democrats (including liberal Jews) allowing this to happen?
Isn’t this what ISIS does? Destroy culture and heritage?
Barbarians.
It was right out something you'd see in Mad Magazine. ☺
On a serious note, In this era, I've never seen anything like this kind of hysteria and violence from the leftist over Trump and these types of events. And I was in the biggest, most deadly chaotic riot in modern American history. That's saying something.
But what I'm seeing here scares me even more.
There appears to be millions motivated by bad intent for our President, his supporters, and the country.
Stone Mountain was purchased by the State of Georgia in 1958.
I still think the statue should be sprayed with blood red enamel and backed on with a torch. Lenin was a murderous dog.
It's my fear, that it's going to turn into a shootin' war! I guess, maybe, it already has. Shots on Congresscritters. Shots on cops! Shots on the populace, in general!
The schools, streets, and TOWNS named after Washington & Jefferson will be targeted.
The statue of Lenin was found in a scrapyard in Poprad, Czechoslovakia, after the the fall of Czechoslovak communism during the 1989 Velvet Revolution. Lewis E. Carpenter, a teacher from Issaquah, Washington, offered to buy it for $13,000. It was chopped up in three pieces and shipped to Issaquah in August 1993. Carpenter wanted to erect it in Issaquah, but that created much turmoil that it was rejected. Before Carpenter could succeed in find a permanent place for it, he died in an auto accident.
Carpenter’s family had the statue sent to a Fremont foundry to be melted down (it was valuable because it was bronze). However, the foundry’s owner, Peter Bevis, took an interest in it and had it erected in Fremont on June 3, 1995. Its location did not last long and it was moved to its present spot at the intersection of Fremont Place North, North 36th Street and Evanston Avenue North in 1996.
You say the dumbest things.
Consider that there are non-Southern conservatives who have zero tolerance to the anything to do with the disgraced Confederate flag, the KKK, and all that these inseparately represent. Good riddance to them. Too bad no one want to address this proactively and get them moved to museums for our nation’s future. Instead, intransigence means they likely get destroyed. I have for decades, for my entire life, believed they should be removed. Sad, but these are not statues of American heros.
“Sad, but these are not statues of American heros.”
But they ARE heroes to some Americans.
The local community should decide.

You have bought in to the left’s logical fallacy that the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate. I explained that to you yesterday and you’ve yet to make a cogent argument for your position. You are “affirming the antecedent.” It’s a well know propaganda technique, straight out of the US Army psyops manual.
I’m going to call you out as a subversive troll that is infecting the forum. Are you less than 30 years old? I’m guessing yes.
And for perspective, name the last national elected official defending the Confederate flag? Not Trump, not anyone since about William Jefferson Clinton. George Allen tried in Virginia a few years ago, but go embarrassed when criticized for it and outed as having actually grown up in sunny California, not Virginia anyway.
As I wrote earlier, the Confederate flag and hero-worshipping statues are going. Just a matter of whether they get moved to a museum (my preference) or to the dump. Maybe there is a junk yard of collectables somewhere with statues of Stalin, Mao, Mussolini, Hitler, and others, that might welcome Lee and his colleagues.
Blah, blah, blah. Stop trying to speak for others. You’re just an idiot and know nothing about history. People like you will allow monuments to the founding fathers and the American flag to be removed. Yeah, you are a troll.
