Despite Proven Technology, Attempts To Make Table Saws Safer Drag On
NPR ^ | Aug 10, 2017 | CHRIS ARNOLD, MOLLIE SIMON

Every day, more than 10 Americans suffer amputations on what is by far the most dangerous woodworking tool: the table saw. Regulators in Washington, D.C., are moving closer to adopting a rule that would make new saws so much safer that they could prevent 99 percent of serious accidents.

But even after more than a decade of study, and the existence of a proven technology that all sides agree works astoundingly well to prevent injuries, it's unclear whether the Consumer Product Safety Commission will finally pass a rule requiring all new saws to have an active injury prevention monitoring system built into them.

Kinda have to have the anti-kickback installed , as well. Table saws throw things at the operator, or past him. People shouldn’t park within 20 feet of the operators side of a table saw. And I’ve shot stuff farther, for kicks.

These have been on the market for years and they don’t sell for a lot of reasons having to do with FREEDOM of CHOICE.

I don’t need to be mandated by the CPSC to protect myself when I buy something that any fool should know will hurt you really badly but that most people use for ages without injury. Someday I may be injured by a table saw but in nearly 40 years of use I have somehow managed, buy using a push stick and well proven safety techniques to keep all ten of my fingers.

The product does not sell because it is cheap to make and over priced and unreliable. He wants to get rich before the patent runs out and he wants the CPSC and Uncle Sugar to help him do it by forcing us to buy the device that is packaged in a saw that he markets or sold to others at an unreasonable price. I’ll also wager that his saw is made in China and is the same basic saw you can buy just about anywhere else. It is not the job of the government, though they do it anyway, to create monopolies and make people rich.

The Power Tool Institute may have a hand in this but in this case I’m happy they do because the inventor, Mr. Steve Glass, wants the government to make him rich by creating a monopoly before his patent runs out. Too bad for him and good for us it isn’t going to happen. The PTI lobby with more money than Glass but he lobbies just as they do but plays on emotions to save people from their own carelessness.

Mr. Glass whines that he was told “safety does not sell”. It does sell when it is priced right. I have bought all manner of push sticks and hold downs over the years but I took off the overhead saw guard because it made the saw less safe.

Also, Mr. Glass will not sell his device as a retrofit kit. Instead he offers it only if you buy the entire cabinet saw from him. I have one of those already and it is a good one. Sawstop claims to be the #1 selling saw in America so why is it I have NEVER seen one in a woodworking store nor do I know a single fellow woodworker who owns one? Geez.

Glass needs to learn more about marketing and less about trying to get the feral gubment to create a monopoly for him to attempt to drive all the other saw makers out of business with gubment help. If his business model had been more practical and less greedy he could have sold a lot of these devices without going to the trouble of setting up an entire saw company to put them on. Price point Mr. Glass and consumer driven need at a practical price point. Get a clue.

Not everybody who craps on you is your enemy and not all lobbies are bad.

The table saw is not the most dangerous machine in the workshop, not be a long shot. The radial arm saw makes the table saw look like a Legos toy.

Be very careful with all machines, and read everything regarding safely using them. Use push sticks and feather-boards; and for God's sake, don't use those cheap miniature machines. Use only those machines that are sturdy with a strong fence.

...Chop saws...

Is that something actually called a miter saw?

Clip/magazine ... same argument.

But they can’t make any money on push sticks.

When these came out I considered one but didn’t buy it becasue:

1. Too expensive
2. Too difficult to install
3. Too hard to maintain. I don’t want to chase problems with micro-currents when I flip on the switch.

Now Steve Glass, the inventor, only offers these if you buy the whole saw. Based on his pricing, a saw made in China to a standard pattern that he buys and labels as his own.

Frankly I resent the hell out of him for lobbying the CPSC with his tear jerker stories in an attempt to grant him a monopoly.

No time left to waste if Mr. Glass is to receive any real benefit from his patent by way of gubment mandated monopoly.

“...specifically prohibiting the CSPC from authorizing safer table saws.”

Wow. That’s a stretch. They don’t want to pass a bill REQUIRING some specific “safeguards” be built into all table saws (Thus killing an industry with unneeded regulation) and you try to make it sound as if they are going to prohibit the adoption of safety systems.

Here is a clue: Nobody needs the CPSC to authorize anything.

Keep your damn fingers away from the blade. Pay attention to what you are doing. If you can’t do that then stay the hell away from power tools.

Indeed, bandsaws can be brutal.

I knew a fellow whose family owned a bandsaw mill. It got him. Fortunately they were able to bury all three pieces of him in one box.

Sad, he got in the wrong place and killed himself.

You can’t make things idiot proof since the human is ever evolving an improved idiot.

I recognize that I am one of those people and stay away from table saws.

The collorory to do not disturb with dangerous tools, is prepare before use to ignore all sudden external noises, bangs and bumps, until safely backed away.

we can make all table saws injury free. Simply make a law to remove the blade. We should also remove bullets from guns and ignition switches on cars.

I saw a teenage girl using a table knife to remove the meat of a coconut. She sliced about 2 inches into the web of her left hand, between thumb and index finger.
Sometimes an innocent act can bite!

The Engineer here finds the defect.

Wood has sharp slivers so sometimes people wear rawhide gloves for hand safety when handling wood.

Leather does not conduct electricity and saw stop FAILS.

The armchair engineers praise their gadget until you list the defects.
