Why are thousands of Haitians streaming into Canada from the U.S.?

Heading to Canada is one of the only options seen by many of the 50,000 Haitians who've been living under temporary protection status in the U.S. — but many don't know they face deportation here, too, should their asylum claim be rejected.

The temporary protection status for Haitians in the U.S. granted after the 2010 earthquake is set to expire in January.

The Department of Homeland Security considers Haiti to be a safe country now, and it's warned that the U.S. doesn't intend to renew that status, prompting the deluge of asylum seekers crossing into Canada.

"There is a major humanitarian crisis coming up this January," said Emmanuel Depas, a New York-based immigration lawyer, who was born in Haiti.

Depas said many of his clients' only hope is coming to Canada. Going back to Haiti would mean living in poverty, facing persecution or, for a fifth of them with U.S.-born children, being separated from their families, he said.

"I've even suggested looking into Canada to people because there aren't that many options," he told CBC News Thursday.

Deport this one first. Nothing but a trouble maker/amplifier.

5) There is a fantastic Summer Clearance Sale going on at Canadian Tire.

4) Haiti is quietly home to the greatest number of Winnipeg Jets fans on the planet.

3) The word is out on the wonders of poutine.

2) They have a province that managed to screw-up the French language even worse than Haiti did.

1) Because Canada votes overwhelmingly Liberal anyway, so there won’t be all the pressure from community organizers to get off the couch and go vote illegally as they had in the U.S.

There was already a large Haitian population in Montreal and Haiti is a French-speaking country (albeit many speak a dialect),

They'd be about as able to comfortably communicate with Quebecois as a Downeaster from Maine with an Alabama sharecropper (before exposure to radio and TV homogenized it some).

Why? Why can’t the children go home with their parents to Haiti or wherever an illegal is from.

This is why the anchor baby loophole must be closed. It was never meant to be this way. It’s time to fix it.

Personally, I’d rather they ‘fixed’ the 5th/13th *loop-hole* (aka ‘welfare’). It’d kill multiple birds w/ one stone: remove a govt boot upon our Rights\property\freedoms, remove the carrot for illegals\’refugees’\etc., improve savings\economy\charity (people doing what they will w/ their OWN $$).

I’ve got less issue w/ an ‘anchor baby’ but more so w/ economic slavery and unconstitutional govt.

Good point! Perhaps and all of the above approach so in time what we have are people who feel pride in America and aren’t just here to sponge off our tax dollars the gubmint seems too ready to give to those who didn’t earn or deserve it.

Welfare should be hard to get and the gubmint knows the scams people pull with having babies then give it to grandma to take care of in the same home. Sometimes up to 10 kids are plopped out to keep this scam going and the household is paid a crazy amount of money per year to take care of the kids until they are 18 and even longer if they go to post high school trade school or college. The adults live large while the kids are provided the bare minimum so they turn to dealing drugs or otherwise working for dealers and gangs until busted or killed. An argument could be made that the gubmint is complicit in the killing of these kids who see no other way. The deck is stacked against them right from the start. Add in a drug using mother who produce less then mentally healthy babies and it’s the script for a bad drama on an episode of Breaking Bad.

Welfare should be for no more than 2 years per kid with a maximum of 4 years total lifetime. If a single mother needs welfare then they don’t need to be having kids. Not even one. It just perpetuates the plantation mentality of not working and living off the teat of taxpayers without working a day in their life. Welfare recipients should also have to work even with a small baby after a few months. I’m sure they could take the baby with them to wash police and other government cars clean offices in the evening (under supervision of course) for a few hours 3 times a week or some other menial work that needs doing that could save the gubmint money in some way or another. They will of course find excuses to not go in then cut off their pay and offer to take the kid into an orphanage. They will miraculously find another source of income and magically remember the name of the father who already lives in the same house. Who knows; maybe someone in that house will finally finish high school and get a real job; maybe even go on to tech school or college where that vicious cycle is finally broken.

If people from other countries can band together, help one another open businesses they all use, thrive and grow, then so can Americans with incentive. Take away the free bird seed...

If they all go to Quebec, that’s one way to get the rest of Canada to agree to turn Quebec loose.

Sorry, but I don’t think we should be playing on the (D) field.

IOW, welfare should be IMPOSSIBLE to obtain. Govt has no authority, at ANY level, to take from one to give to another of govt choosing. Either we have 4th/5th/13th Rights or the Constitution is null/void.

Now, back to the thread at hand, I’m more of the stickler type:
- Back to stamps. Welfare needs a stain associated with it again.
- Welfare based on worth. One is able to buy, insure, register that new hoopty w/ rims, one doesn’t need taxpayer $$$. 4 TVs, gaming console, etc.?? Guess what can be sold 1st...Random annual evaluation.
- DNA sampling. Govt should ‘help’ find the parents of said children...and MAKE *THEM* PAY. Start w/ the police DB. Failure to provide and find ‘em living in the same house? Prosecute for fraud, dead-beat parenting and termination of aid.
- Bi-yearly(?), random drug testing for all on the dole w/ immediate termination upon positive. *I* have to to get/stay on job, so do they.
- Mandatory job training and WORK while on the dole (we agree here). NOT talking ‘office work’ either, make it “I want to get OFF welfare”
- Down-scaling of $$ for each child (33% each??) Hard-line, ANY children while on = perm/immediate termination.
- I’d put the max. @ 5yrs. Get ‘em to where the tykes are semi-self-reliant, but def. lifetime max.

And one thing the Haitians can’t blame it in is Colonialism, since Haiti has been independent for just about as long as the US.

We have stories of what it is like to drive across the border from Haiti to the DR...STARK contrasts just miles apart.

That aerial image says it all!

Millions of tree seedlings were planted in the mid 80's to reforest the hills and mountains. People were paid to not harvest them for charcoal...then as Baby Doc was deposed and anarchy ruled, those seedlings were just the right size for charcoal. The physical erosion of the land resumed with a vengeance.

Trump's fault! (Someone had to say it!)

I hate listening to Creole. The French are very protective of their language and yet, if you try it with them, they are so nice and pleased you made the effort. Something to remember when I’ve revisited Paris!!
