Sperm counts among western men have halved in last 40 years – study

Reasons for the ‘shocking’ drop are unclear, say researchers, and represent a huge and neglected area of public health __

Sperm counts among men have more than halved in the last 40 years, research suggests, although the drivers behind the decline remain unclear.

The latest findings reveal that between 1973 and 2011, the concentration of sperm in the ejaculate of men in western countries has fallen by an average of 1.4% a year, leading to an overall drop of just over 52%.

“The results are quite shocking,” said Hagai Levine, an epidemiologist and lead author of the study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

While infertility treatments such as IVF can offer solutions to potential ramifications of the decline on one level, little has been done to address the root of the issue, said Levine, pointing out low sperm counts might also be an indicator of poorer health among men more generally.

“This is a classic under the radar huge public health problem that is really neglected,” he said.

It is not the first time researchers have highlighted concerns about sperm counts, but previous studies have been criticised, with some saying the decline could be down to changing laboratory methods, or studies failing to take into account whether participants were selected on the basis of infertility problems.

But the authors of the latest study say they have addressed such concerns, analysing only studies that used the same sperm count method, were of a reasonable size and involved men not known to have infertility problems or disease, among other measures.

Do you think women would give up birth control pills to save male sperms?

If the pills are withdrawn from the market, they'd have to. Unless the Mexican cartels start smuggling them in. But it would be fun to see the feminists go head on against the health professionals.

You were supposed to have 10, you low-sperm slacker. ;)

I don’t remember anyone counting my sperm. Sneaky rascals!

While you were out, they installed a meter in the shower drain.

Obesity.

Milk from dairy cows which are commonly fed large amounts of female hormones to stimulate increased milk production. The hormone passes straight through into the milk and is consumed by males.

Soy consumption in the world is through the roof, it’s in everything, and soy produces a chemical that mimics estrogen.

Men: don’t drink milk, don’t eat soy, and don’t get fat.

You’re welcome.

Maybe those westernized school systems that allow girls to kick boys in the nuts for no reason while not even granting the boys the right to defend themselves is taking its toll.

Maybe fathers should start defending their sons against this, rather than siding with the girls who assault their sons.

My Revolutionary War ancestor had 21 children by three wives--the youngest child was born when he was 73. Probably no soy in his diet. According to the inventory of his estate, he had cows, sheep, hogs, geese, bees, and a still. Living in the land of milk and honey...and whiskey.

Remarkably for that era, 18 of his children lived to adulthood.

It is appalling how people trust the frankenfoods. That sucralose and aspartame are even SOLD, let along given sweet (!) deals to be in every [name type of product] is completely against all human interest. I’m all for freedom, but only if informed. Most people don’t know what neurotoxins lurk.

Gots to have toxins in the lawn, toxins in the chewing gum, toxic colors in every sort of food or snack, in the laundry, in the lotions, and no one gets it. And we wonder about all the Alzheimer’s and autism and infertility.

Tightie-whities have been the object of derision for over 20 years now. If that’s what was behind a decline in male fertility, we would have seen a rebound because very, very few men wear them anymore.

Out here, the use of weedkillers and pesticides that are not biosafe can not be used if you are in a close proximity to water or livestock-and with all the creeks, a lake and a river, and the fact that almost everyone keeps some livestock-even if it is only chickens-that is just about anyplace. The fines are ruinous, running into the 10’s of 1000’s of $$$-but just about everyone is an old hippie, off grider, prepper, etc, as well as a redneck, so that is just fine with us. There are 2 organic farm-to table restaurants out here-T5’s guy and I eat at one that is on a ranch on the river with rustic loveshack cabins-the food is great. The nearest food market specializes in organic produce and free range/grass fed meat. People just need to read labels-if you see an ingredient that ends in ose, that means “sugar”-avoid that and any packaged food, period-it probably contains poison...

I assume they’re only testing men with fertility problems.
Most men don’t get tested for this type of problem, so how can they know something like this for sure?

Since I can’t afford the farm to table LA restaurants, I try to make that stuff myself. Yours sound great. There were little rural places like that in Switzerland when I lived there. Food never tasted so good.

“But it would be fun to see the feminists go head on against the health professionals.”

It would be good to see how the press would frame it.
