A truly masterpiece of fake news. It has to be given some kind of fake news award of some kind I think.
Woo hoo!! Now they can shut down all their coal-fired generators and run their country on wind power—for 12 whole days per year.
Gee, why didn’t they say that six months of wind can provide 800% of Scotland’s electricity needs (for one day). That would make an even BETTER sounding story!
6 months to produce 6 days worth of electricity = 118% of nation’s electricity?
OMG!!!! The BS meter is spinning out of control and is about to explode!
OMG!!!! The BS meter is spinning out of control and is about to explode!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....what a waste of money.
Penguins at the beach was awe inspiring!
One looked like my garden in May.
How much was generated and not used? Demand is low at night.
I don’t expect much from the media, but would be happy with accurate information, and all relevant information.
Equivalent of. Wording is everything. Then you get to the small print. ;-)
So it took renewables six months to generate enough power to supply six days worth of power.
Its great to hear renewable electricity generation in Scotland has reached a new record high. In the first quarter of this year, generation was up by 13 per cent compared to the same period last year, there was also a 16 per cent increase in capacity,
Okay increasing generation by 13% sounds great but when you are talking really small numbers an increase of 13% really isnt that great.
I work at a Nuclear Power Plant and if we increased our capacity by 2% we would be getting bonuses. Capacity is a measure of reliable output. If you can raise your capacity by double digits it means you have been really unreliable.
Lets be real. Wind Power is a wealth redistribution scheme from the taxpayers to to wealthy.
In fairness, the article is completely incoherent. I read it and was unable to determine where the writer got any of the numbers. I think the "6 days" line is a typo, but it's hard to know.
This article is more about the sorry state of journalism in Scotland than it is about wind power.
Well, hell, I just passed gas that contained enough energy to power the entire United States’ electric needs! (...for about an atto-second)
Just so you dont look foolish someday. You cant generate electric power that is not used.
If you generate more power than the grid needs you end up heating your transmission lines and windings on your transformers. You cause damage to your hardware.
The people that control the grid go to a lot of trouble to balance supply and demand.
They are tossing figures out all over the place (usually a good warning of a scam). In the article it said in the 6 months wind power generated 6.6 million MHh of power, and the total demand of Scottland was almost 12 million MWh - so wind power covered 57% of it.
Not sure where they get the six days from - maybe the percentage increase? And 57% of their electricity from wind power seems unbelievable.
sooo living in sweden is like living inside a wind tunnel? Swell
That’s just great and all, but how do they store all of that excess energy to use when the wind ISN’T blowing?
That’s the beauty of fossil fuels. Concentrated sunshine in an easily extracted and portable form.
Until battery technology can achieve the same energy storage densities as a pound of gasoline, wind and solar will not be competitive.
Given that the Scots have not found a magical way to make wind turbines generate more electricity than any other country, this, if true, is more a statement about the piss-poor state of Scotland’s economy than it is about a renewable energy success story.
