The chancellor of California’s community college system said he wants to abolish the college algebra requirement and called it a “civil rights issue” in a Wednesday interview.

Eloy Ortiz Oakley, chancellor of California Community Colleges, made the argument while speaking with NPR. He pegged algebraas overly burdensome due to the disproportionate rate at which it prevents students from graduating from community colleges; nearly 50 percent of community college students do not complete their math requirement.

Mexico North, formerly known as California, and formerly an actual part of the United States, is now a strange place. Hostility to American, Americans and American values is the core ideology there. Perhaps achievement in mathematics is “too American” for the place?

First year Algebra really isn’t that difficult; it is not much different from basic logic. Kids just don’t know how to think logically any more; for them, it is all about emotion.

Why not just simply hand them a diploma - saves money and time.

I have a few diplomas and certificates from some community colleges, bombed algebra but have a fairly good paying job and private office.

If they’re too stupid to do simple algebra then they’re too stupid for college.

Just skip the formalities and hand them a degree.

As long as they bury themselves in student loans that they hand over to you, of course.

eloy ortiz is mainly admitting that many of the individuals attending his crappy community “college” should have been given a 6th grade “diploma” years ago and that’s it before they became bathroom attendants or some such. How pathetic. eloy probably got “educated” in the same way.

Was it not but a couple of days ago that I read on FR that 47% of high school seniors were straight “A” students.

Seems to be some sort of disconnect going on here.

Now I read that 50% of college freshmen cannot understand Algebra.

I got news to everyone it has been abolished for at least 20 years. if you have difficulties with mast you can apply for a waver and take a alternative class. I know of at least one person who graduates California community college and then used her AA to get into the University of phoenix and graduate there with a BA and masters in family counseling. I would never suggest that anyone use this person for any sort of counseling....she is as messed up as they come. The fact that she could not pass a basic Mat course says it all.

Anyone who is heading to college without at least three years of high school math shouldn’t be going.

And if there’s a program in college that doesn’t require three years of math, it shouldn’t be a program.

“This is precisely what President Dubya meant when he described “the soft bigotry of low expectations.”.”

OR, low expectations based on generations of experience, observation and IQ test scores. The pattern is always the same, minorities fail to meet standards others have met for hundreds of years, spend millions of dollars trying to increase test scores, fail, lower the standard.

This is why,for right or wrong depending on view,so many want to import (high skill/educated) workers. The American educational system is disgracefully lacking other countries in STEM(Science,Technology,Engineering,Math). The one room school house generations ago taught more. Our schools are liberal indoctrination centers and tax payer funded money pits that are not producing the workforce and brain trust of tomorrow.

"nearly 50 percent of community college students do not complete their math requirement"

So half of them are below average. (Snicker)

You also read that the SAT scores are declining. This is the easier SAT Clinton forced changed because black kids were trailing white kids who were trailing Asian kids.

A grades are given out to keep parents from complaining and mean nothing now. The average grade at Harvard is A-. “A” is now a participation trophy.
