Why universal basic income is gaining support, critics
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | July 15, 2017 | Kathleen Pender

The idea of a universal basic income — monthly cash payments from the government to every individual, working or not, with no strings attached — is gaining traction, thanks in part to endorsements from Silicon Valley celebs.

Some see it as a way to compensate for the traditional jobs with benefits that will be wiped out by robotics, artificial intelligence, self-driving vehicles, globalization and the gig economy. Others see it as a way to reduce income inequality or to create a more efficient, less stigmatizing safety net than our current mishmash of welfare benefits.

“I think ultimately we will have to have some kind of universal basic income, I don’t think we are going to have a choice,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the World Government Summit in Dubai in February.

In a commencement speech at Harvard University in May, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “We should explore ideas like universal basic income to give everyone a cushion to try new things.” And in a July 4 blog post, Zuckerberg praised Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend, the nearest thing to universal income in this or any country. Since 1982, Alaska has been distributing some of its oil revenue as an annual payment, ranging from about $1,000 to $3,000, to every resident including children.

Because it’s COMMUNISM and the stupid twits in Silicon Valley are all for it. The masses need to be controlled for their own good and this is how you do it.

Of course nobody points out Venezuela has UBI too..

The other problem is that the only money government has to give away other people’s ... working people’s money.

One problem with it is that it’s never enough.

When you figure in the cost for tattoos, weed and pizza, that stipend is going to have to be pretty hefty.

It's way past time to stop the government subsidies and corporate welfare this ass clown collects.

Dirtbags like the iranian musk and the scumbag zuckerberg just want a means to control the population. Nothing works better than welfare for all. These two belong in prison.

The Alaskan fund is a unique situation. The state leases out large tracts of land for oil development. The royalties paid to the state go into the fund. The fund, in turn, is paid out to residents.

Something of value feeds the coffers of the fund, which is the exact opposite of what is being espoused in the universal basic income.

But the idiot millionaires like zuckerfraud wouldn’t be able to grasp that basic truth.

And give away Hollywood’s money too. Celebrities only get to keep $50,000 per year, the rest is given away.

They never figure out that SOMEONE has to continue working and paying taxes for this to work. But why would he when he is paying 140% of his earnings in taxes? yes, 140%.

Also, take $20,000 as guaranteed basic minimum income for all. The moment it is enacted, $20,000 becomes equal to zero in purchasing power. So then it’s not enough, and it’s raised to 30, which is not enough, which is raised to 40, which is not ..... continue until doomsday.

Since 1982, Alaska has been distributing some of its oil revenue as an annual payment, ranging from about $1,000 to $3,000, to every resident including children.

This dividend is at least based on a state resource, allowing residents of that state to partake in its riches. (A more "progressive" state would take those payments and "invest" them; i.e., government would keep the money because it knows best how to use them.)

A basic income is based on taxing one individual, and giving it to others. It's theft, pure and simple. And if everyone receives this "income," it would sure be so watered down that it wouldn't be enough to subsidize people to become entrepreneurial, or any other venture for that matter.
