NYU librarian laments 'fatigue' from 'presence of white people'

A New York University librarian recently felt compelled to pen a blog post bemoaning the “racial fatigue” she experiences “in the presence of white people” following an academic conference. April Hathcock said that she “hit her limit” after spending five days “being tone-policed and condescended to and ‘splained to” by "white men librarians" and "nice white ladies."

A New York University librarian recently bemoaned the “racial fatigue” she experiences “in the presence of white people” following an academic conference.

April Hathcock, a Scholarly Communications Librarian at NYU, recently attended the annual American Library Association [ALA] conference in Chicago, a trade conference for people in the library profession.

"It[']s been 5 straight days of being tone-policed and condescended to and ‘splained to." Tweet This

Right after the conference, Hathcock took to her personal blog to describe her “Post-ALA Race Fatigue,” lamenting that she was suffering from “serious race fatigue” after spending five days amongst her colleagues [emphasis in original].

“Race fatigue is a real physical, mental, and emotional condition that people of color experience after spending a considerable amount of time dealing with the micro- and macro-aggressions that inevitably occur when in the presence of white people,” Hathcock wrote. “The more white people, the longer the time period, the more intense the race fatigue.”

While Hathcock noted that she is normally exhausted after such conferences for reasons unrelated to racial issues, she said that this time she “hit her limit” after spending five days “being tone-policed and condescended to and ‘splained to.”

Hathcock offered a litany of complaints about her fellow conference attendees, including the “white men librarians” who “complain about being a ‘minority’ in this 88% white profession.”

She also slammed the “nice white ladies” who told her to be “civil” and “professional” when she tried to “talk about the importance of acknowledging oppression and our profession’s role in it.”

Hathcock concluded by acknowledging that even though there were positive aspects of the conference, such as meeting new friends of color, she was nonetheless exhausted by the entire ordeal.

“Luckily, the rest of my summer will be spent going on vacation with family,” she concluded. “And when I get back to it all, I’ll keep on fighting, bearing in mind the inspiring words Dr. Hayden imparted to us at the Spectrum celebration: ‘You gotta be in the room. You gotta be at the table. You gotta fight.’”

Hathcock did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Campus Reform

I’m sorry but WTF is “tone-policed?” Something new my white male children will have to apologize for?

I’m afraid to smile at or even acknowledge anyone who isn’t white anymore.

"Race fatigue is a real physical, mental, and emotional condition sign of racism on the part of the person complaining about it"

Fixed it.

The reaction must have been fierce. She’s closed comments on her blog. I wonder how her co-workers reacted.

She must think that having her stupidity and incompetence pointed out by patrons and colleagues is "micro-aggression." Chances are, it's just honesty.

Just a thought - perhaps if Miss Hathcock were competent at her job, nobody would feel the need to "'splain" anything to her, and if she didn't act like a hoodlum from the ghetto, there wouldn't be any "tone policing."

I’m not disagreeing with you per se, however, the article states that she works at NYU as a librarian, but the ALA conference was held in Chicago. There likely would have been librarians from every state there.

Maybe librarians are snobs in that they think they know a good bit about everything?

Soooo tired of all the race baiting.

“”Luckily, the rest of my summer will be spent going on vacation with family””

The rest of the summer will be spent on vacation? That’s a cushy job right there. Sure hope she’s planning on a relaxing vacation in the darkest of Africa - the Congo perhaps...wouldn’t want her to see any “white” people on that vacation.

That jerk obozo ought to be strung up for introducing this ridiculous and annoying concept to the black population of this country.

Which way to the stacks?
as opposed to:
WHERE DA BLACK BOOKS AT?

Maybe her fatigue really was caused by the THE continual effort required to place food in her mouth to maintain her obesity

Re: Hathcock: A wasted mind is a terrible thing.

April Hathcock, scholarly communications librarian at NYU and a former lawyer, approaches open access as a way to bridge intellectual freedom, stating, “[Open Access] allows users to gain access to the materials that they need to engage in true intellectual freedom.” However, not everyone has intellectual freedom, Hathcock argues. “We must look at the systemic reasons for why people don’t have access to information and why people aren’t enjoying intellectual freedom,” she says. In doing so, those who are underrepresented are then invited to this conversation and a better bridge can be built between OA and IF.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

How's that working out for you? The Left in general and Negroes in particular abandoned this before MLK reached room temp.

I wish someone would start a little buzz in the SJW BLM useful idiot movement to get all wee-wee’d up about being in the USA instead of the glorious Homeland of origin. Get them all fired up about starting a movement to go retake Africa. THAT’s where they need to go get back all the stuff they think they’re owed.

Since they’re so obsessed about living in the past of a hundred-plus years ago, why not go back 200 or 300 years? Do us all a favor and get the h*ll out of this horrible nightmare they’re living through. Such unbearable suffering certainly could be resolved by going back where they came from.

Maybe all the fake blacks like Pocahontas and the Clintons and Obamas would join them.

It’s a nice dream anyhow.

Yes, race baiting is a very real phenomenon whether it’s NYC or Chicago. No argument here. I guess the liberals thought when they put the ghetto grifter into the White Hut everything would be Unicorns and Rainbows. It’s just getting worse. Like trying to cope with an 18 year old son who has been spoiled since birth. Only now he’s not quite as cute as he was when he was little.

It takes two to tango. She was being irritating, and annoying, and a bother to those who had to be around her.

Awwww. Poor little (not!) black racist, indoctrinated from birth with that Black Nationalist garbage, feels so quite alone in a sea of white educated professionals. She laments that there are not more people of her complexion around. She feels lost.

Well honey, if more black kids didn't cut classes in school or didn't seek to disrupt every class they did attend, if they applied themselves to their studies and deferred instant gratification so they could get valid college degrees and professional certificates, maybe you wouldn't be so alone and black at these conferences. The other attendees are the people who DID attend their classes, completed their assignments, did not disrupt their classes, did not get pregnant and drop out of high school, etc. and did get their college degrees and professional certifications. That they're white is no surprise to me, from what I've seen in schools. Shut your stupid complaining mouth and perform a reality check. Then get back to us.
