I smoke about one cigar every six months. I found it comical that back in the day when you could smoke in bars in Seattle, if I were to light up a cigar the people would complain and they’d make me smoke it outside. Yeah, I mean the cigarette smokers complained. :-)
“This says there are 258 billion cigarettes sold each year. That’s 12.9 billion packs. I’m too lazy to do the math. But if we tax the 92 billion dollars in extra health care costs into each pack sold, that would be fair and equitable. “
Just think how much we could tax if we included fat people and idiots who think taxing is a good way to control behavior.
But a restaurant owner who invests his life savings in purchasing the property, openimg and running the business has no say whatsoever in whether or not a smoker can smoke on his property. This is something the free market should decide, not some nanny state overseer. The restaurant owner's hand is forced to accomodate non-smoking behaviors at the expense of those who would otherwise choose to smoke.
you discriminate against drivers then, do you...?
Any discrimination.
Thank itard for butchering what i typed on the tiny pad.
I have no doubt smoking harms your health to some degree, though the claim is generally over blown IMO. I do, however, believe 2nd hand smoke harm claims are bullcrap, save for asthmatics and others with lung problems. BTW, I’m a non-smoker.
“As far as “liberty” - smoker’s rights END where MY airspace begins, and as long as smokers keep their filthy stench to themselves, I don’t care what they do, but don’t expect me to subsidize their medical when they start to have “problems”.
What else are you subsidizing with your taxes? Of course smokers are much worse than illegals - but a smoking illegal should be put in a smell free tax shelter.
however, just go to your local indian casino and see how the smokers behave....they could care less if they blow smoke in your face deliberately and sometimes it seems like they are deliberately obnoxious about their smoking...
“No moral crusade - it just plain STINKS! Smokers wreak.”
BAN PERFUME and intellectual midgets.
A brash generalization but TRUE.
I agree.
“I have no problem with bans inside buildings, no problem with bans outside in areas that are close to or funnel to entrances.”
Ban is an interesting word.
I do not think smoking is healthy by any means, and I am a smoker. I have made some observations of my own over the years and I can tell you if cattle live long enough they all get cancer. Never saw an old bovine without at least some cancer. I have never seen a cow with a cigarette though, they must be sneaking around.
My sister did not smoke (her husband did not either and her home was always non smoking)and made it a point to eat healthy before it was even a thing. She died fairly young...barely made it to 60, of cancer. Lung cancer. Her doctors said it happens more than people think. Most of her medical team stated recent cancer research was pointing to genetics more than other causes.
As I said I do not believe cigarettes are healthy by any means...but I think their harm has been greatly exaggerated, especially when it comes to things like second and third hand exposure. I think we will find as time passes that many things we now think about cigarettes is just not so.
That is a good point. Muslims are already starting to rile the waters about pork products so I can actually see that happening. A few years down the road people will have to sneak around to eat bacon.
Yes that is the type of thing that aggravates me! People do go out of their way to encounter smokers so they can have their say about it. Those people remind me of people that will drive up on a sidewalk to run over a cat because they hate cats.
I agree with you.. I was simply stunned to learn how many non smokers died of lung cancer. I was also shocked at how aggressive all lung cancer is. I guess that makes sense with it being an organ only a few cell layers thick.
I don’t like sitting behind a car with cigarette smoke rolling out. If someone chooses to smoke, fine.. I am not sure it’s the demon it was made out to be.
Sadly, the libocrats have made it a “dirty” word.
I agree, I spent all day (twice as round trip) flying a couple years ago, switched planes. I have no problem with not smoking in a plane, that air has no where to go. My issue was they really should have smoking areas in airports. Just small areas where it is allowed, that is all I ask. Especially if there is a layover, the only way to smoke is to leave the terminal buildings and then you have to clear security and all that again. Craziness. I have heard rumors that VIPs (who pay a fortune for extra treatment) do have a private lounge area at larger airports where they can smoke but no idea if that is true.
Yes smoking bars and restaurants should also be allowed, leave that up to the owner. Non smokers don’t have to go to those places if they choose not to.
I am left handed and agree with that! I am also a short person that feels discriminated against for that too!
Being a short person that is left handed and smokes is no picnic I tell you. Haven’t spent much time thinking about it but seems like I should organize a protest or something.
Sadly, the libocrats have made it a dirty word.
