Durbin Statement On Discovery Of Asian Carp Near Lake Michigan
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) ^ | 6/23/2017 | U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)

CHICAGO – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement after the discovery of an adult Silver Carp near the T.J. O’Brien Lock and Dam in the Calumet River:

“I’m deeply concerned by today’s announcement that an adult Silver Carp was discovered a mere nine miles from Lake Michigan.  If this invasive species reaches the Great Lakes, it could cause significant economic losses and irreversible damage to the ecosystem, and threaten the drinking water of 30 million Americans.  Now more than ever, we must redouble our efforts to prevent their spread by ensuring strong federal funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative – which President Trump’s budget eliminates – and by pushing for the completion and release of the Brandon Road Study.”

I read the original story on this, this morning and not about Dick Durban. I’m not from there but once in awhile, the wildlife officials here, do check boats. They said it will mess up commercial fishing.

How do Asian carp threaten drinking water?

It pees in it, my little chickadee.

OK, why does the federal government have to provide the funding or even be involved in this. See, right away it becomes political, and then the Left can play their little cute games of saying Republicans want everyone to drink dirty water and want to pollute the Great Lakes. What is stopping the Great Lakes states from simply meeting and coming up with an action plan and a funding mechanism for stopping the Asian carp?

Seriously, states have become nothing more than appendages of the federal government. They exist in name only. They're about as autonomous as the satellite states of the old Soviet Union.

They don’t. He is confabulating carp with zebra and quagga muscles which will clog water intakes without continuous maintenance. He is ignorant and a moron like most politicians.

The Russians were from Central Asia and just took a dump in the lake. Hence, the title of the article should be Asian Crap Discovered Near Lake Michigan.

“Strong federal funding.”

These useless mouth breathers think the only thing that CA fix everything is the government. How about declare open season on those fish? Fisherman can go get as much as they want.

Yet he shows no concern about the two legged invaders from south of the boarder..... that are already here.

Kind of like the illegals pouring across the borders.

Exactly. They are just undocumented bottom feeders hiding in the shallows.

Pour money into the rivers and lakes, Senator Dick Derpin’. That should fix it.

Durbin has nothing to do with it...

Problem really is a regional issue for any states bordering on The Great Lakes. If the carp get in one Great Lake, the very valid concern is that they will get in all of the lakes. They are like an aquatic locust/ant/cockroach...Spread like wildfire as they grow fast and takeover the ecosystem. Earlier this year, I saw an article stating that state of Michigan is offering a million dollars for solutions to keep them out...

The fish seem to be excited by noise and do jump/leap when boats go by...my spouse got smacked in shoulder by one—said it hurt—the fish can weight 50 lbs.

ON government website about Asian carp They can grow up to 5 feet in length and weight 80 pounds. They out eat native fish, often eating 40% of their weight, daily.

Just throwing more federal funds at the problem seems counter-productive, since the original funding apparently has not worked.

How about a 'real' plan on how to deal with the problem -- then ask for funding.

Eat them. Snake heads too. African snails three and. Burmese pythons for. That is a whole smorgasbord of ethic delicacies. All invasive, all in need of eating.
