Despite his tweet in the aftermath of James Comey's dismissal in May, President Donald Trump did not make and does not have tapes of his conversations with the former FBI director, he tweeted Thursday.
"With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are 'tapes' or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings," wrote Trump in a series of tweets.

Nobody uses tape now a days. You can’t even find it in the stores.

It’s called an implied hypothetical.
“I am [supposedly] being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who [supposedly] told me to fire the FBI Director!”
Those of us who appreciate irony and the implied hypothetical do not require the explicit addition of the qualifier “supposedly” in order to understand Trump’s meaning.
I think Trump should’ve already appointed an interim FBI director, but there will be obvious blowback if / when he does so.
He still hasn’t submitted the Chris Wray nomination to the Senate, either.
House committee wanted an answer on the tapes by tomorrow.
It has been speculated elsewhere that Comey recorded conversations and had them confiscated by AG Jeff Sessions after his firing.
McCabe is the acting FBI Director.
Maybe Sessions has them. He might be able to handle something like that.

No, by tweeting that “Comey better hope there are no tapes” he not only bluffed Comey into telling the truth, but also went on record that he had nothing to hide if their were tapes. The Democrats were then reduced to chasing after tapes that either don’t exist or won’t do Trump any harm if they do.
It was yet another brilliant tweet.
If it wasn’t for Trump’s tweets we’d never hear anything that’s true.
And that is how you bluff at the poker table. Obama never played poker much. Everyone called his bluffs.

I took Trump's statement at the time as a frustrated joke. There had been so many leaks of inside the White House conversations (supposedly with transcripts of what each person said) that he was speculating that Comey better hope that the "spies" don't release a tape of the Trump-Comey conversation. The joke being everything else seems to be taped around here against my wishes.
I think that is what you're saying but I thought a more detailed explanation of what Trump is saying would be helpful.
Sort of. The way I’m seeing it is that Trump made an attempt to keep Comey honest by implying that he might have access to records of their private conversations somehow. It seems to have worked in that Comey had to acknowledge the basic fact that everyone had called Trump a liar about, that Comey had told him three times that he was not under investigation.
