Cleveland has two active modern steel mills in operation, and a new one is planned for Toledo, all based on ore from Minnesota. Cleveland Cliffs is actively developing more reserves. We wont be running out of iron any time soon.

I read somewhere that the Soo Canal was the most heavily protected spot in the US during WWII. The enemy could quickly shut down our war effort if they could stop the iron ore from getting to the mills.
