Trump says China tried but failed to help on North Korea

Jun 20, 2017

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Chinese efforts to persuade North Korea to rein in its nuclear program have failed, ratcheting up the rhetoric over the death of an American student who had been detained by Pyongyang.

Trump has held high hopes for greater cooperation from China to exert influence over North Korea, leaning heavily on Chinese President Xi Jinping for his assistance. The two leaders had a high-profile summit in Florida in April and Trump has frequently praised Xi and resisted criticizing Chinese trade practices.

"While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried!" Trump wrote in a tweet.

It was unclear whether his remark represented a significant shift in his thinking in the U.S. struggle to stop North Korea's nuclear program and its test launching of missiles or a change in U.S. policy toward China.

"I think the president is signaling some frustration," Christopher Hill, a former U.S. ambassador to South Korea, told MSNBC. "He’s signaling to others that he understands this isn’t working, and he’s trying to defend himself, or justify himself, by saying that at least they tried as opposed to others who didn’t even try."

China tried

Trump has been had by China. China has had no intention of doing it in earnest. It will stay this way as long as U.S. fails to deploy enough sticks(clubs) to beat China on the head. If Trump's forte is a 'fair trade,' he should insist on it to China. He cannot justifiably demand a fair trade to other countries if he lets China, the practitioner of the biggest unfair trade, slide.

All they need is a mere fraction of enthusiam they have shown in beating up Syria's Assad.

I don’t think trying for a few months equals “being had”. Seems to me Trump is acknowledging this quite quickly and openly. Now he doesn’t have to hold back and give China anymore chances.

Trump was not “had” by China.

He knew it was likely all along that China wouldn’t accomplish much, for several reasons. What this does is say to China, “You tried, I give you that, but now we are going to do what your incompetent leadership could not do as men.”

Wait, you are trying to find the “chink “in China’s armor? Hilarious!

The comedy writes itself.

I will wait for him to revive “fair trade” and resolutely prosecute sweeping secondary sanction to any Chinese business entities which did business with N. Korea. If they do not come up, his words may not mean much with regard to China. Short of outright unilateral military action to N. Korea, there is no other leverage to compel China to make serious attitude change.

Trump has been had by China.

You still don't know how to read Trump, apparently.

Here's the translation: "I went through China first. They made an effort but failed to get the Norks under control. Now NK has killed an American, and we're going to level them, with no China interference whatsoever."

An amazing piece of statecraft, the likes of which you will not see again in your lifetime.

Trump gave China a shot. Now the famous words are uttered: YOU’RE FIRED!!
Next we take care of business with a few hard nosed friends who are also done with the Norks. Japan, for example.

Apparently, the “most beautiful piece of chocolate cake” was not sufficient to woo Xi.

Hey, he tried... it would have been nice if China had cooperated, but now no one can say we didn't give them a chance.

Now it's on to plan B, whatever that may be. Trump has always said NK is our biggest threat, so I don't think plan B is going to be to simply ignore the situation.

Nope.

That’s right. He’s calling them out. He knows as well as I do that NK is a cat’s paw, controlled by China.

Of course, you can’t just say that! But it’s very evident that Trump knows it.

I could believe that if he set up the groundwork properly. So far I have not seen much. Economic pressure has to be in the waiting to be deployed. No useless talk of haggling over a tiny number of Chinese companies to be put on a secondary sanction list. So much sensitivity to Chinese pride and "face." There is no way to put serious pressure on China as long as they care so much about China's face.

On top of that, D.C. swamp creatures are trying to sabotage any of his actions, while tying him down with relentless call for impeachment, which creates serious drag in his leadership, even when the allegation has absolutely no ground. There is no shortage of whining China appeasers both inside and outside of his administration.

“He cannot justifiably demand a fair trade to other countries if he lets China, the practitioner of the biggest unfair trade, slide.”

And you really think Trump will let China trade policy “slide” now? He gave “diplomacy” a try, now he will act. I hope Mattis has a workable plan and that like the attack in Syria, Trump does exactly the same thing with NK. Their missile launch facilities are not near the SK border. Taking them and their nuke facilities out should be job one. The little Gook will crap himself to death! The Trump Reality Show will be along any time now. A few B-2’s “equipped with MOABs. They will be gone before the detonations occur.

Well, that’s your slant on it.

I think it’s all yellow journalism myself.

You’re thinking about the wrong groundwork now! This is no longer about China and trade, this is about groundwork for a direct attack on the Norks.
