Yes, that’s what he said, but I guess I do not understand the expression. What does it mean?

I was on the USS Shreveport when I collided wit the USS Fairfax County around 1993-94. That was during a towing excise though. The XO, who had the con was immediately relieved of his position and flown off the ship. The funny thing I remember about the incident is that of all the life raft containers that hit the water that day, only about half of them actually opened.

“Having the deck” means you are the Officer of the Watch. In plain language your in charge on the bridge.

When I was in the Med we were hit by another ship while med-moored (stern to the quay) in port.

The ship that hit us was also med-moored. A large passenger ferry snapped its mooring lines in a heavy wind storm hitting the ship next to us driving it into us.

We lost 3 stanchions on the O-1 and the captain's gig.

Scary - don’t they check those from time to time to make sure they work?

“no big crisis”

How many missing sailors does it take to make a “big crisis” So far there are 7 MIA.

You would think so, but not being in the Deck Dept. I don’t know the frequency. The Shreveport was a mess of a ship though, especially given that it was a flagship for COMPHIBRON 8, more like section 8. But then I was a bit spoiled coming off the Wisconsin to that.

I wonder, have lookouts with binoculars been done away with?

The funny thing is that I had almost all of these mnemonics memorized prior to joining the Navy. My grandfather drilled them into me as a boy.

Even red nuns have odd black cans.

The best people on earth leave black port on entering.

Ship driving at night can be very demanding especially as part of a carrier battle group. I will defy anyone to tell me a carrier's attitude at night by visual means alone. They have absolutely terrible darken ship discipline. The Nimitz was particularly bad about this.

Thanks for that breakdown.

It strains credulity that something like this could happen with so many ‘checks’ on deck.

The Officer of the Deck(Underway) is the Captain's direct representative on watch. He has effective command of the ship during his four hour watch.

OOD qualification is a demanding process and not given lightly by a CO. He is trusting you with his ship, his career, and the lives of his crew.

“Radar? Was nobody watching?”

With the O’bamanized navy, they may have to put in automated proximity warnings like the airlines have...

It is real:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/us-navy-destroyer-collides-with-container-ship-near-japan-suffers-damage/2017/06/16/111df46e-52e7-11e7-b74e-0d2785d3083d_story.html?utm_term=.cee104075670

How on earth does a experienced Navy captain let his state of the arc ship collide with a big slow moving cargo ship?

Theses Aegis destroyers are not cheap, and are in short supply they are needed for the defense of Japan and the USA from Possible North Korean Missile attack.
