The building may have a policy, but you have to make your own decisions.

If I can make it to that Fire Stair, I’m getting out of the building. I can watch the fire from the pub down the road, which is a much more comfortable place to be.

What the heck kind of safety instruction is this? Do we have any firefighters here? Would we advise the same thing in the States?

I can’t imagine staying somewhere when I knew the place was going up in flames. I understand not wanting a big apartment building full of panicking people - but wouldn’t you rather have panicked people down on the sidewalk instead of roasting alive in their apartments?

When you elect a muzzie mayor in one of the worlds largest Western city, you have to wonder what the Britt’s are thinking. Writing this helps me to be distracted from our dear sons death last week !!!

Any further questions, hmmm ???

There have been no official statements on the cause of this fire.
The fire is still burning on the upper floor.
The building had no sprinklers and only one stair case through the centre of the building.
The Cladding on the outside of the building was new and is under suspicion.
The fire swept from top to bottom of the building in just 30mins.

Any word on how many people lived in there?

Cladding was from Omar’s Refurbished Tent and Supply, Ltd. yes?

Is the mayor saddened? And is the Police chief pleased with the diversity of the victims?

And do you have one of those explosive refrigerators? ..

The believe the number could be as high as 500, no-one appears to really know.
Whoever authorised that cladding will be picking the stitches out of their office chair for weeks to come. Oxford CC has carried out a check on the cladding they are currently fitting to the city’s tower blocks. All okay...apparently.

The Mayor is indeed saddened....
He has promised a comprehensive investigation. The GOV will be leading the investigation, Nothing to do with him, yet more hot air.

How do you clean an LCD after S*t*n’s workers have appeared on the screen?

The local community has rallied round magnificently with clothing ,food and shelter. No doubt the national response to this will start soon.

My Fridge is German and has a thermal cut out on the compressor. Tested by yours truly. :)

German fridge - good.

500 is a lot of people. I am noting confusion in the reports - some say fire started on lower floor - like the 4th - and spread up and others report fire started high - like 24th floor - and spread down. I’m thinking the former makes more sense.

And on a totally only marginally related note, bringing propane absorption refrigerators to mind (even though that is not what your explosive ‘fridges are) has caused me to investigate whether we want to add such a device to our collection of ‘camping’ things - we added a propane water heater and demand water pump for our shower maybe three or four years ago. It has been a wise investment. The problem with adding a propane fridge is that you can buy a lot of bags of ice for the asking price of one if them.. ;-) And it might only get used for one week a year..

The images in the reports today have shown it starting low and burning rapidly up one side of the building before enveloping it.
Will keep ears open tomorrow. Must go. ZZZZZZzzzzzzz

With regards to the fridge:
Have you wished you’d had it on previous expeditions? If so , a fridge it is.
All of the Camper Vans I’ve used in NZ had an Electric Fridge, run from the domestic battery.

Have you wished you’d had it on previous expeditions?

Short answer is yes if only because after several days stuff that is not well packaged gets waterlogged from the melting ice.

We have partially 'solved' that issue by dedicating one cooler as a 'don't add ice' unit and we cool it using frozen gallon jugs of water. Keeps things cold and unless the temps are continuously in the high 30's (° C) and someone - usually a teen - leaves the cooler in the sun or 'forgets' to latch it there is still an ice chunk in the jugs when I get back. And even should we need to toss some ice into it, it isn't as messy as the coolers stocked with loose ice from the start. And since I freeze gallons of Wallyworld "spring water" (the jugs with the asterisk and note that reads 'Source: Pittsburgh Municipal Water Supply' or similar ;-) we can, should we choose to disturb the equilibrium in the liquid/solid water mix, actually drink or otherwise use the potable melt.. ;-)

The hardest thing had been convincing those who make the daily ice run that just because they don't see any ice in that big white cooler, it really DOESN'T need any added.

All of the Camper Vans I’ve used ..had an Electric Fridge, run from the domestic battery.

They have camper models that are propane, propane and 12 V battery, and propane, battery, and AC line. If we choose to pursue that thought we would probably be looking at the propane/battery type since there would be no AC line where we are, but there are plenty of vehicles should a 12V back up become necessary.

Looking at the pics at the Daily Mail this morning has me thinking that while the cladding may have spread it, overloaded wiring is what started it.

Info from BBC about why residents were told to stay in place and the cladding on the building:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_p_PdqjVvI

I watched another video of a woman with kids inside of the building. She was looking down from the window, praying, talking to people who kept telling her to shut the door (she’d go out in the hallway shouting for help). She sent this through facebook live. Then there was nothing. How awful.
