These 10 Photos Will Make You Rethink Your Trip to Cuba

I recently got back from a 10-day trip to Cuba. And during those days I gained some insight into what thousands of Americans are going to find when they leave their luxury hotels and lavish supermarkets and spend significant amounts of money to travel to an island hobbled by embargo and food shortages. In a nutshell, it’s going to be a huge, huge mess. But (probably!) worth it, particularly for the adventurous and culinarily unambitious.

The trip I went on was a “people-to-people” educational group voyage, in compliance with U.S. State Department guidelines. I like to think of it as the last government trip to Cuba, before normalized tourism takes hold. The group spent most of its time in Havana, but we also visited Viñales in the west and Trinidad on the Caribbean coast. Cuba is a fascinating and outrageously photogenic place. Here’s what I saw.

The food is bad, but the plumbing is worse

If Communism is such a good idea, why does it fail without trade from capitalist nations?

Cuba is only subject to trade restraints with the US. Cuba can still trade with Mexico, Canada, and the rest.

What’s missing is that, pre-Castro, Cuba was a vacation spot for US tourists. Pre-communism, it was actually a nice place to visit.

The Obama/Democrat plan for the U.S. They came close during the past 8 years, the worst economic period in America’s history.

If not for the Revolution, Havana would have become Las Vegas on Steroids.

Uh huh. No mention of the communists there who may have contributed to both the embargo and the food shortages.

I found the "culinarily unambitious" comment interesting.

“Cuban cuisine is based on imported rice, black beans, government issue cheese product #1 and enough sugar to give you diabetes in a week. It tastes about as good as it sounds.

I’m not blaming Cuba for this.”

of course not; this Prog/Kommie writer views Cuba and Hillary alike: it’s never their fault, but always somebody else’s fault.

***and enough sugar to give you diabetes in a week. ***

Reminds me of an old political cartoon from fifty eight years ago.
Nikita Khrushchev is setting at a breakfast table with his cup of coffee out for a lump of sugar. Castro is pouring a 100 lb sack of sugar into the cup and on the floor.

Hey Wally, "thousands" of Americans have been flocking to Cuba via Canada for decades and know everything that you think you just stumbled on, so have the Europeans from their home countries.........Nothing has changed in decades and nothing will unless the Castro regime and the communist party is totally kicked out of Cuba.............

Unbelievable that Obama would lift the embargo on this country..........Makes one wonder what his payback was.

Too bad those photos are all jacked up in Photoshop. It’s a bad idea to use artsy images with over saturated colors as photo reporting.

From “One, Two, Three”

C.R. MacNamara: Cigarette? Cigar?
Peripetchikoff: Here, take one of these.
C.R. Macnamara: Thanks. Hm, ‘Made in Havana’.
Peripetchikoff: We have trade agreement with Cuba. They send us cigars, we send them rockets.
C.R. Macnamara: Good thinking.

C.R. MacNamara: You know something? You guys got cheated. This is a pretty crummy cigar.
Peripetchikoff: Do not worry. We send them pretty crummy rockets.
