What If Anything Should The Feds Do To Protect Campus Free Speech?

Since the federal government heavily subsidizes most of our colleges and universities through grants and loans, is it too much to expect that the officials who run them would take steps to protect the First Amendment rights of students and faculty members?

Some of them make little or no effort at doing so, as exemplified by the recent absurdity at Evergreen State College in Washington, where the administration smiled benignly on the raucous student protesters who disrupted a biology professor’s class because they had declared that white people were to remain off campus on their proclaimed “Day of Absence.” (If you’re not familiar with that affray, you’ll find the details in this essay on Minding the Campus by Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars and this article on National Review by Tiana Lowe.)

Around America, free speech on college campuses is under attack. We find invited speakers being disinvited or shouted down, “bias incident” reporting systems that encourage students to complain when they hear anything they don’t like, and professors who demean students who dare to question their assertions.

In the fairly recent past, most higher education leaders would have admitted that the assault on free speech was bad, but tried to say that it isn’t really much of a problem. But now we find that some actually praise it, such as New York University professor Ulrich Baer, who recently argued in the New York Times, “The idea of freedom of speech does not mean blanket permission to say anything anybody thinks. It means balancing the inherent value of a given view with the obligation to ensure that other members of a given community can participate in discourse as fully recognized members of the community.”

IMO when conservatives speak at Berkeley the national guard should be called in.

The national guard was used to protect people’s rights in the 60s, they can do it again now.

Start with getting rid of all diversity programs. If a woman really needs to major in womyn’s studies, then she is probably too stupid to be going to college in the first place. It’s that same woman who will then attack men as rapists, demanding justice for the perceived inequality.

Round up the commies, anarchists, progressives, Alinskiites, Marxists and eject them from the country.

Yes - they love to receive taxpayer dollars. Require conditions be met to receive federal dollars. For instance, any school supporting protests against any speaker, left or right, will not receive. There may be some other conditions to add as well.

There is one powerful thing the Federal Government can do to protect free speech on college campi. The Federal government can altogether end all federal intervention and financing of education to include grants, loan guarantees, research funds. all of it. Tuition will go down as all the new building for prestige and to house new federal programs is canceled. Schools will have to compete again for students. Free tuition for low IQ losers paid for by high IQ scholars would end. Content would be added back into the vacuous feel good education that “earns” degrees now. Stupid courses that have no useful futures for students will disappear from catalogues. Indoctrination would fade as the money avoids it.

Not true. Just about every college and university in the country are subsidized with taxpayer funds. If a student takes out a student loan to go there then the college is subsidized with taxpayer funds and must adhere to the Bill of Rights. The one university I am aware of that doesn’t allow ANY federal or state funds at all, including student loans, is Liberty. Not sure if there are others.

Evergreen State College is a school ran by the State of Washington. It also may get funding from the Federal Government. I am sure the antenna are up in the Trump Administration with the nation wide attention Evergreen is getting. Their failure to control the anarchy may bring in the Feds.

It’s an Education Factory putting out a poor quality product - it’s all about the money.

http://evergreen.edu/costs

from link:

During the 2014–2015 academic year, 64% of Evergreen students received some form of financial aid. The average award was $12,714.

You may be eligible for aid, including grants, work study, and loans. You must file a financial aid application every year to be considered for aid.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available from the Federal Student Aid Office beginning October 1 each year.
Undocumented Washington resident students can apply through the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) beginning October 1 each year.

Evergreen’s deadline to receive FAFSA or WASFA results from the processor is February 1. Go to Evergreen’s Financial Aid website for more information. Evergreen’s School Code is 008155.
