Europe’s only private army looking forward to Highland Perthshire event

Europe’s last remaining private army will play a central role in a weekend of events at a Highland Perthshire castle.

The annual Atholl Highlanders Parade and Gathering take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, at Blair Castle.

“We think it is fantastic that the Atholl Highlanders are still in existence in 2017, they are completely unique and a living and breathing part of our history and heritage,” said Julia Sim, sales and marketing manager for Blair Castle.

“They are also a huge asset to the castle, to Highland Perthshire and to Scotland, as they attract so many visitors to the castle.”

The Highlanders have always had very close ties to the British monarchy as castle archivist Jane Anderson explained.

“Queen Victoria made her first visit to Scotland in 1842 when Lord Glenlyon, later the 6th Duke of Atholl, took a bodyguard of his men to greet her at Dunkeld, with several other local lairds.

I’m thinking Western Europe needs more private armies.

Yes, if you overlook some of the heated disputes about who the rightful monarch was....

You would think the English would get over that, and just do the right thing.

Every two years since 1946, the Scottish Council of the UK Scout Association has held a unique Scout encampment on the grounds of Blair Castle in Perthshire, Scotland. The Blair Atholl Jamborette is made up of international patrols of Scouts - each consisting of half Scottish Scouts and Scouts from overseas. The Scouts function as a patrol during the ten days of the Jamborette, and then each of the international Scouts spends up to a week in the home of a Scottish Scout.

I took a troop here in 2000. Amazing time. The dads got to hang out in London while the boys were visiting with the British Scouts.

Purely ceremonial “army” used for tourist attractions. Anyone in the U.K. could set up essentially the same thing tomorrow.

The late Sionnsar would refer to the pipes as “Instruments of Mass Destruction.” After all this time, (five years?) I still miss him on the Undead Thread.

I find that laughable! If, you know the Scottish history history of William Wallace to the Jacobite uprising and Culloden Moore disaster!
