USAA Faces Customer Backlash After Canceling Ads on Troop Supporting Sean Hannity

USAA, an insurance, bank and financial services company that caters to active duty military, veterans and their families, is getting slammed by members after announcing on Twitter Wednesday night the company was withdrawing advertising on the Sean Hannity show in response to pressure from liberal activists trying to silence Hannity by cutting off his advertising base. It was not stated by USAA if they advertised on Hannity’s Fox News Channel show or his nationally syndicated radio show.

Hannity is a strong supporter of the military and veterans. He has a strong fan base among the military community.

The effort to drive Hannity off the air was promoted by Democratic Party front group Media Matters which posted a list of Hannity’s advertisers this week for liberals to complain to after Hannity pursued the unsolved 2016 murder of Democratic Party activist Seth Rich in Washington, D.C. and possible connections to Wikileaks.

USAA is taking a pounding on their FB page, FWIW.

Personally, I think USAA blundered badly when they started running ads like this in the first place. To me, there are some industries where a company actually diminishes the credibility of its brand when it advertises in places where I expect to see ads for beer, laundry detergent and Viagra ... along with promotional spots for crappy TV shows that I would never watch. Financial services is one of those industries.

“Are you a USAA member? I am. Have been for over 30 years. Best insurance company in the business. I can almost guarantee USAA will lose zero business because of this. USAA members are about as loyal as they come.”

I have been a member for close to 50 years...and loyalty has its limits. That USAA now stands for nothing and can be persuaded by ideology is a deal breaker. Brokerage fees ($8.95) can be had cheaper as can auto and home insurance policies if one just shops around. USAA has gotten too big institutionally as well as for its britches.

“Any recommendations?”

Not yet... I’ll let you know what I find.

Over many years, USAA always had the best service and the best prices. I can’t tell you how many insurance sellers have approached me and then gone away when I said I was with USAA - saying “I can’t compete with them”.

But loyalty works both ways and the bond between USAA and it’s customer base, formed primarily by people who have actually served this country, can be broken. Taking the wrong side of this boycott is how to do it!

I’m a USAA member since 1982, back when it was just for officers and I received my commission after being an enlisted man. I called and left a lengthy complain with the customer rep who said she was typing it in. Based upon her asking me for some clarifications of what I said and/or spellings, I do think she was typing it and will send it forward. I included that USAA’s move seemed to be in curious timing when liberal, leftist and anti-military organizations are leading attacks against conservative news commentators and hosts.

I agree about voicing your opinion with them. But transferring all of one's insurance contracts to some inferior company because of one advertising decision is foolish. Insurance is complicated and involved. It's not the same as changing the brand of peanut butter you buy.

I may not agree with every single thing some companies do that I do business with, but that doesn't mean I will move my business because of it.

Many other companies will have the same flaws and then what do you do? Keep boycotting until there's no one left?

I choose to take the saner route and not get overly excited about this.

See my post #85. And the customer rep I talked to was very courteous and told me immediately that there was an official release that she was instructed to read to me. She then said that after she read the statement, she would take down and submit my complaint. I have always had very courteous and competent with every USAA representative I’ve dealt with.

What is their official release? “We do not sponsor opinion shows”?

For any that are thinking of leaving, don’t pull all accounts out of spite. My USAA credit card, for example, is 5% points lower than others. If I pull anything out, it will be in investments.

See my posts # 85 and 87. I was neither put on hold nor transferred to voice mail. I called the main USAA number: 1-800-531-8722

I just called USAA and told them I am starting with a new GEICO policy at midnight tonight. I am also saving $60/year and the Geico policy includes car rental and deductible waiver which USAA did not. It was an identical policy quote.

Told them to please pass it on up that the reason I changed was “in protest”. She said she would surely do that.

yes, the statement said that they do not run ads on any opinion shows and the advertisements running on Hannity were done by mistake.

I found the line of the announcement: “Advertising on opinion shows is not in accordance with our policy and we’ve since corrected it,”

Like so many here, I have three decades plus with USAA. The experience you reported is what I would expect.

They’ll hear from me too.

Put my Pop on the case. A few of his Army buds are on the BOD for USAA. He has expressed his displeasure directly to them.

As for me, I cancelled my credit cards today.

USAA panicked when the military started to be reduced.

What they should have done is lay off staff.

What they tried to do is protect their employees.

It is not the same company I joined in 1979.

I am a Member of USAA. I am not just a customer.

It is like a cooperative. I have a “Subscribers Savings Account” which indicates my ownership in the company. I get to vote for The Board Of Directors.

They have become a company dedicated to San Antonio and their employees.

Look at the foolish investments they made in San Antonio.

A theme park?

A retirement community?

These are important to an insurance company?

Or are they important to the USAA employees?

Once they get Sean then they will go for Rush. This is a coordinated take down of conservative media. Before it is over the only acceptable “conservative media” will be Bill Kristol and George Will.

There needs to be a coordinated counter punch to the left where boycotts are concerned. If the silent majority rises up these companies will really know what fear is instead what passes for fear from the latte sipping pajama boys of the left.

This one is a no-brainer. It is so easily won.

All you have to do is CANCEL your policies. This would end in ONE DAY!
