Oregon burrito shop run by white women shuts down amid accusations of cultural appropriation

Full title--Portland burrito shop forced to close amid accusations of cultural appropriation, stealing recipes

The closure of Kooks Burritos comes a week after its owners, Kali Wilgus and Liz “LC” Connely” were featured in the popular Willamette Weekly, Fox News reported. The week-end pop-up shop, initially housed in a taco truck, was an immediate hit when they first started dishing out their Mexican-inspired cuisine after a trip to Puerto Nuevo last December.

“I picked the brains of every tortilla lady there in the worst broken Spanish ever, and they showed me a little of what they did,” Connelly told the Wilamette Weekly.

“They wouldn’t tell us too much about technique, but we were peeking into windows of every kitchen, totally fascinated by how easy they made it look.”

Connelly explained she recreated the tortillas they tried on the trip through a trial and error process and then filled them up with California-inspired ingredients for hungry passersby.

----

While the shop had already been opened for months, the May 16 profile prompted harsh critiques and editorials that further fanned the outcry.

“Because of Portland’s underlying racism, the people who rightly own these traditions and cultures that exist are already treated poorly,” an article in the Portland Mercury reads. “These appropriating businesses are erasing and exploiting their already marginalized identities for the purpose of profit and praise.”

Mic.com also offered commentary: “In less than six months, Wilgus and Connelly have managed to build a business. And depending on how you look at it, their methods are either genius of the latest example of white folks profiting off the labor of people of color.”

Kooks Burritos has already deleted its website, Instagram account, Facebook page, and Twitter profile.

Their biggest mistake was refusing to bloody themselves in hand to hand combat with the fascists who would deny them their right to work for a living.

I've got no sympathy for the two gals.

I’ll grant you Texas citizenship so you can make chili, frito pie, chili con carne, use chili powder, nachos and... burritos. Since canned milk was also invented in Texas, honorary citizenship grants you to make and eat Tres Leche Cake. Oops, that pretty much eliminates what people think of as Mexican food.

Add to that, Dr. Pepper, hamburger (not McD’s), chicken fried steak (beef, not veal), smoke a brisket...

I hear that some Europeans have even had the gall to appropriate the Spanish language, which everyone knows originated among the Roman Catholics who have lived in Latin America for seventeen billion years.

Great! (/sarcasm)

So French fries can only be made by people of French heritage?

So Hungarian goulash can only be made by Central Europeans?

So Hamburgers can only be made by Germans who come from Hamburg Germany?

So Frankfurters can only be made by Germans who come from Frankfurt Germany?

So Swiss Steak can only be made by people who has Swiss heritage?

Where is all this politically correct nonsense going to end?

Oh wait, I was born in Texas, so I can make all those things too! I love chicken fried steak-I have to learn how to make that! BBQ too, don’t forget those Texas BBQs!

I lived in California, so I can make salads and tofu and granola, lol.

Portland icon VooDoo Donuts is on the list as well (”religious” appropriation). White people bad are apparently bad juju.

The bottom line seems to just be to discriminate against whites wherever possible.

F*ck these people. They should move to Europe or Saudi Arabia, so that the actual Americans can put their talents to use.

I so agree. The dilemma is, what to do with them!

Put them in cages before they put us in boxcars.

“....The dilemma is, what to do with them!...”

I can’t post what I really think as the post would be deleted and I’d probably be banned from FR. However, I will say this: for years, we kept them locked up in state mental institutions known as insane asylums. The most radical of the bunch should have a free ticket back into the “rubber room” never to be let loose on society every again. Right now, the main thing is to keep their leaders as far away from the levers of govt. power as possible......or as stated above; they’ll have us all in boxcars on the way to the gas chambers. Yes....they’re that totally insane.
