Full title--Portland burrito shop forced to close amid accusations of cultural appropriation, stealing recipes
The closure of Kooks Burritos comes a week after its owners, Kali Wilgus and Liz “LC” Connely” were featured in the popular Willamette Weekly, Fox News reported. The week-end pop-up shop, initially housed in a taco truck, was an immediate hit when they first started dishing out their Mexican-inspired cuisine after a trip to Puerto Nuevo last December.
“I picked the brains of every tortilla lady there in the worst broken Spanish ever, and they showed me a little of what they did,” Connelly told the Wilamette Weekly.
“They wouldn’t tell us too much about technique, but we were peeking into windows of every kitchen, totally fascinated by how easy they made it look.”
Connelly explained she recreated the tortillas they tried on the trip through a trial and error process and then filled them up with California-inspired ingredients for hungry passersby.

While the shop had already been opened for months, the May 16 profile prompted harsh critiques and editorials that further fanned the outcry.
“Because of Portland’s underlying racism, the people who rightly own these traditions and cultures that exist are already treated poorly,” an article in the Portland Mercury reads. “These appropriating businesses are erasing and exploiting their already marginalized identities for the purpose of profit and praise.”
Mic.com also offered commentary: “In less than six months, Wilgus and Connelly have managed to build a business. And depending on how you look at it, their methods are either genius of the latest example of white folks profiting off the labor of people of color.”
Kooks Burritos has already deleted its website, Instagram account, Facebook page, and Twitter profile.

Ok ... let’s for a moment accept that white people should not make traditional foods of indigenous Mexicans. Cultural appropriation and all that.
But, the same rule should apply to indigenous Mexicans. So: no flour tortilla, no beef, no chicken, and no onion should be allowed in the authentic, indigenous Mexican tortilla. Also, cheese is a European invention, so that’s ruled out as well. No cilantro, either. Because all of these ingredients — which account for about 90% of the typical burrito — originated in either Europe or Asia.
A recognizable burrito is pretty much impossible if limited to ingredients that are native to the Americas. It would only be a genuine, indigenous Mexican burrito, untainted by Mexican appropriation of European and Asian ingredients, if it were a corn tortilla stuffed with fish or meat from a nutria or other rodent, tomatoes, and peppers.
What about the cultural appropriation by the Italians using tomatoes (origin in Central and South America) or the Irish using potatoes (origin in the Andes)? Or Latinos using wheat tortillas?
When I lived in Germany I frequented a
Chinese Food restaurant owned and operated by Italians.
Can you imagine how triggered a snowflake would be at that!
I remember being in Iquitos Peru and the housewives were crazy about I Love Lucy. I guess it had recently been dubbed in Spanish. This was in the 70s.

Their third mistake was telling the truth as how they come about.

When I was in Brazil I had Pizza in an Italian Restaurant owned by a German. It was after the war if you know what I mean!
But... but... the white girls were just trying to be “diverse”. Isn’t that what all the leftists want?
Or maybe they “identify as” Mexican women. That should get them some level of protection, right?
And they only “stole” the recipe and tortilla-making technique out of necessity and desperation so we all need to have sympathy for their situation. Portlandians need to understand their struggle and stop oppressing them.
With white folks just doing and promoting the ideas, food, music, and art of white folks, I guess the 'flakes want America to have an all-white culture. It worked before, I guess it could work again just fine. Most people truthfully haven't been enchanted with this "diversity" shtick of the past 20 years anyway.
