Full article title: "Melania and Ivanka wear black veils to meet the Pope at the Vatican after deciding not to wear head scarfs on Saudi visit (just like Michelle Obama) - as Pope asks the first lady if she's feeding Trump cake"

First Lady Melania Trump and the president's daughter, Ivanka, dressed in all black and wore veils to meet Pope Francis on Wednesday, just as former First Lady Michelle Obama did when she met Pope Benedict.

The women traveled to the Vatican on Wednesday with President Donald Trump, who was meeting with Francis for one of his most high-profile talks.

Trump, Melania, Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner were greeted in a Vatican courtyard by Archbishop George Ganswein, the prefect of the pontifical household.

Melania and Ivanka kept with tradition and wore veils to meet Francis. The veil, or mantilla, is traditionally worn by women as a sign of respect when meeting the Pope. Trump senior aide Hope Hicks wore one as well.

You're welcome. And I agree about Melania and Ivanka. Ivanka is revealing more and more to me that she is kind of a peacock.

Re: religion, I thought Melania's family was Serbian Orthodox. But like you, I haven't seen any family religion stated in print anyplace, so who knows.

re: Melania brought up Serbian Orthodox?

If you come across anything definite, let me know. My understanding was that a large percentage of residents in those areas preserved their Orthodox religion and culture out of public. My suspicion is based on that beautiful traditional fashion choice. It looks like something her mom or a religious advisor helped her choose.

He could have been more gracious to a woman who led the Lords Prayer at a public presidential rally and a POTUS who included Christ in his inauguration

They generally do wear head coverings when meeting the Pope.

I struggle with this. I believe taking a couple hours out of my week to properly worship with other Christians is an important practice but many times I leave mass feeling empty and jaded because of stances pushed by the current Catholic hierarchy. My priest tries to avoid it but he often falls in line. I don’t feel inspired. I feel like I’m being pick-pocketed both monetarily and spiritually.

I started focusing an hour of my week on reading the Bible. I have to confess it isn’t something I’ve put into practice in my life and always depended on the church for my religious teachings. Only now at 32 have I realized how misguided that has been.

I believe in Catholic doctrine but I find more peace and focus on Christ when I read and meditate on my own. It’s bittersweet because I would love to worship with my faith community.

I like the Trumps, however, ladies don’t wear hats or veils anymore in church and doing so made them look dumb

It's traditional and actually has scriptural precedent, even of the Papists are generally apostates even from their own strictures.

I would kind of agree with you: head coverings stopped about 1970 or so. Among my Catholic school friends, we vied for the prettiest mantillas and the most beautiful rosary beads.

And what about when meeting the king of saudi arabia?
But of a double standard here
Should have gone unveiled for both or worn a very token headcover
Ivanka looked ridiculous in millenial widow’s weeds

"...who died?..."

The RC church. The Red Pope killed it.

Did melania leave off her wedding ring? It is so big you should see it even from that angle. Interesting austerity choice if she did . What about ivankas wedding ring? I have never paid attention to hers.

I think she looks great. It is traditional to dress soberly and conservative when meeting the Pope. Something tells me if she showed up in a red dress and stiletto heels, you’d have something to say about that too.

And double standards with muslims should be a priority not a reason to bitch.

Hey, the usual Ivanka-haters must be sleeping in this morning. Where are they?
