MANCHESTER, England — Salman Abedi, the 22-year-old British man believed to have killed 22 people in a suicide-bomb attack, had ties to al Qaeda and had received terrorist training abroad, a U.S. intelligence official told NBC News on Tuesday as the United Kingdom raised its terrorist threat level to the highest category.
The U.S. intelligence official, who has direct knowledge of the investigation, said Abedi, whose family is of Libyan descent, was identified by a bank card found in his pocket at the scene of the explosion after an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena. The identification was confirmed by facial recognition technology, the official said.
Abedi had traveled to Libya within the last 12 months, one of multiple countries he had visited, the official said. While he had "clear ties to al Qaeda," the official said, Abedi could have had connections to other groups.
Members of his own family had even informed on him in the past, telling British authorities that he was dangerous, according to the intelligence official.
The U.S. official said Abedi's bomb was "big and sophisticated," using materials hard to obtain in Britain — meaning "it's almost impossible to see he didn't have help."

They were first generation immigrants, the son was ‘native born’.
I see two situations (not at the same time, counter situations actually) in such families...
Either the parents are upset by their kids’ western ways (sometimes resulting in avuse and honor killings) or the families who left Islamic theocratic societies have kids who believe their parents have betrayed the faith.
And this sadly isn’t the first Islamic terrorist who was reported (sometimes even interviewed) to authorities only to be cut loose and then eventually seeing him attack.

Good on the family and the authorities and politicians needs to be held accountable for letting this carnage happen.

Frequently with the vest-style bombs, in the explosion the head pops off and goes practically straight up. The lower body basically stays put, and the waist-to-neck part is vaporized in the explosion.
Its not uncommon to find a head in surprisingly good condition near the blast sight. Likewise the legs. The explosion is directed outward from the torso.
Pro-tip: always look up when investigating an indoor suicide bomb site. The head of the bomber might be in the ceiling or stuck in the rafters.
