If the opening bid is $1.6B then Trump needs to read his own books. He should have asked for $20B and negotiated for $10B.

$1.6B is such a small amount. It is about equal to a day and a half of the per diem federal deficit spending. It is pocket change barely a rounding error. It's actually an insult.

“Border wall funding shrinks in Trump’s 2018 budget, but White House insists otherwise”

WASHINGTON — The White House has drastically scaled back demands for funds to construct a border wall, seeking $1.6 billion in the budget submitted to Congress on Tuesday — $2.5 billion less than announced just two months ago.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said Tuesday that “we are absolutely dead serious about the wall” and insisted that the administration hasn’t scaled back funding targets.

But in mid-March he explicitly called for $4.1 billion toward wall construction by the end of 2018. He and aides reject that there is any discrepancy, however.

The Trump budget blueprint rolled out in mid-March called for $2.6 billion toward wall construction by the end of 2018.

The stopgap budget that runs through Sept. 30 includes $1.5 billion for border security — including $341 million for upgrades to about 40 miles of existing fence. But none of that is allowed to go for construction of new barriers along the Southwest border. In cutting the deal with Congress, President Donald Trump dropped a demand to such funds.

Mulvaney said at the time that there was too little time left in 2017 to start building a new wall anyway. He touted the $1.5 billion as sufficient for repairs, and to work on roads and planning for a more extensive barrier.

He also promised that the other $2.6 billion toward wall construction would be included in the 2018 budget plan.
But that plan, submitted Tuesday, includes just $1.6 billion toward the wall.

Even so, Mulvaney insisted Tuesday in the White House briefing room that “it’s not accurate” to say that the 2018 budget request represents a scaled down funding target for a border wall, though — like aides — he didn’t square the current request with the much larger target he cited two months ago.

I never declared a major failure.

LINK

Trump’s expressed plan for paying for the wall: Mexico will pay.

Not gonna happen.

Trump’s implicit plan for paying for the wall: America will pay, but will benefit from the protection and will absorb the cost because of the greater wealth derived from Trump’s economic plan.

It’s happening.

Just wish he’d been straightforward about these implied ways of paying for the wall from the beginning.

You did declare Mexico would not pay for the wall. I'd say that's a major failure.

You have also made it clear you think he wasn't truthful about how the wall would be paid for.

It was never my thought that Mexico would cut a check to the United States, and then the wall would be built. That's not how things work, and I think you understand that.

The wall would be started with our funds, but over time Trump would find a way to get compensation of some sort from Mexico.

Your comments reflect that you do not expect that to happen, and you think he was untruthful.

Aren't those failures? You state these things won't be happening, and that he was untruthful. You can't see how you've framed him as failing on this?

I agree with your take on it.

I don’t mind discussing the wall, but going bat “s” crazy based on a Reuter’s claim..., that’s a bit of a stretch.

>> “The wall would be started with our funds, but over time Trump would find a way to get compensation of some sort from Mexico.” <<

Here’s the way: Place a 50% national security service charge on all bank ‘wire’ transfers of funds to Mexico.

The illegals will be paying for the wall with their ill-gotten ‘earnings’ they get at the expense of under-employed Americans.

You are taking the word of Reuters.

Is that right?

I posted more information in post #42, link on #46, from Dallas news. I also saw it on FBN. The dollar amount isn’t a claim or opinion, it’s out there in the proposed budget. Like I said, I don’t blame this on Trump, I blame congress. LS thinks Trump may have made an infrastructure deal with Saudis to pay for wall, could be.

And you talk to me about the inability to think positively?

Read what I wrote. I said the wall would be built and that Trump’s strong policies of lower taxes and fewer regulations would more than make up for having to pay for the wall.

That’s success not failure. And it’s reality. Get a clue and get real.

>>The reality is that Trump and Sessions will not be there forever. The wall would be.<<

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This point is crucial.

I remain very optimistic it will get built—perhaps through some of the mechanisms LS has suggested.

I think they want to get a foundation investment from Congress (e.g., $1.6B) and will take it from there.

It has been my take for quite some time now, that folks on this forum would have ripped Reagan to shreds over time.

This constant nit picking every few minutes about some perceived weakness or another is self-defeatist.

Some folks have absolutely zero trust, even after what Trump has already done.

He has given us many reasons to trust us. He’s already done more on “right to life” than any president. None the less folks exhibit massive amounts of angst.

Folks, chill the hell out!

(not you e.s.)

Uh . . sorry to reply to my own post, but forgot to mention the foundation “investment” would allow them to flush out the legalities and get the Federal Government fully engaged in the management of the project.

Trump plans on getting money from Mexico in one form or another.

You know as well as I do, that if Trump asked for $10 billion, folks here would have gone absolutely postal. “HE SAID MEXICO WAS GOING TO PAY!”

He asks for a much smaller amount, perhaps knowing how he’s going to pull this off, and he won’t have to take it all out of budgetary funds. We just don’t know right now.

So here we are, folks wringing their hands, “Oh me oh my, the sky is falling...”

This is juvenile.

Patience folks. Patience...

Your words were, “NOT GONNA HAPPEN!”

You stated it with regard to Mexico paying for the wall.

If you don’t want to be taken to task for what you said, think before you say it.

You charged major failure there.

I knew it was a bad idea. There was nothing I could do, so I accepted it.

As for what happened afterwards, 3.5 million applied for the amnesty when he’d been promised only 1.0 million illegals were in country.

Both sides of the isle lied to him.

As part of the bill he signed, new measures were put in place to stop illegal aliens from coming in.

Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama/Congress refused to enforce the laws on the books.

I was against Reagan doing it, but what it resulted in was not Reagan. It was all those other entities.

We should have been good to go. Still, GW coming into office thought it a swell idea to promise another amnesty. At least ten million more would have been legalized under him, if he had gotten his way.

It was about this time that I began to wake up to the full level of treachery that is the DNC and GOPe.
