We're up, but still have some problems

Posted on 05/19/2017 5:06:05 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

John says we're up but we still have some configuration problems, but they're going to have to wait until he gets home (3 hours). His laptop is not working and the only way he can get in is by his phone and that's giving errors. He's afraid others on mobile devices may be getting errors too. We're on a new version of the db software now and apparently there are some compatibility issues. And we're sporting some new drives including a new SSD (solid state) drive. Should be working pretty good after he works out the configuration problems, then he has to finish the sha-256 installation for security for credit cards. Then on to a total redesign of the system. It never ends.

Thank you all very much for hanging in there with us.

God bless.

it uses hardware but has an endless supply of it. if one fails, there is auto fail over to an alternate. and you can have all you want or as little as you want on demand

so, yeah, hardware cases to be an issue.

when has it not worked? all files are kept encrypted and triple redundant. AWS alone has over 15 million servers distributed worldwide. anyone who thinks having your own hardware is more secure or more reliable is a couple years out of date.

just saying, sometimes new technology is actually a good thing.

PS: and its a lot easier to use.

“all files are kept encrypted and triple redundant”

Ok. I imagine the cloud is very reliable. I’d say the FreeRepublic database ought to be kept both in Robinson’s server and in the cloud.

A cloud problem would probably be the result of malice, not equipment malfunction.

It was working fine this morning, but the partial page loading issue has returned. Will the next series of improvements eliminate that problem?

I hope so. Our db has grown to the point we don’t have physical capacity to copy and work with it at the data center when there’s a problem. Turns out there were bad blocks on John’s large drives at home, too, and he had a devil of as time making room for it. We’re going to have to upgrade our entire operation.

Haven’t seen the problem you’re talking about in awhile. I set my preferences to 50 messages and 20 results and every page loads great. http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/settings

Jim, with all due respect: what in the world are you talking about? You guys need some serious IT help here. There are many people on this site whom have volunteered to help you. Is it hubris that prevents you from asking for expert help? It’s 2017—hosting a website like this is down to a science.

Well, we’re not going to put it on the cloud, so I’m guessing we’ve got to design and build a new system from ground up. You want to spec one out for us with all the latest and greatest?

Sure, I’d be very happy to contribute. I’d suggest you start a separate thread asking for expert input on modernizing your software and hardware. In the thread, please detail the current architecture (hardware + software), which will allow us collectively to make recommendations. It’s hard to give directions where to go if you don’t know where you are. :)

Can’t get a better layout for posts. There isn’t a web site out there that is as easy and simple to read and follow as FreeRepublic. I think the comment section and methodology is above par. I like that you can hit a code and it takes you back to who you are commenting to. So much better than Facebook, which confuses me to a gnarly end.

Indeed. Thanks
