By 2030, you probably wont own a car, but you may get a free trip with your morning coffee. Transport-As-A-Service will use only electric vehicles and will upend two trillion-dollar industries. Its the death spiral for cars.
A major new report predicts that by 2030, the overwhelming majority of consumers will no longer own a car instead they will use on-demand electric autonomous vehicles.
By 2030, within 10 years of regulatory approval of autonomous electric vehicles (A-EVs), the report says, 95 per cent of all US passenger miles traveled will be served by on-demand, autonomous, electric vehicles that will be owned by fleets rather than individuals.

silly non-question...
Car control will become the new gun control, with the same propaganda line that car control opponents are dangerous government-hating psychopathic racists.
“My 98 GMC will still be running fine in 2030.”
You’re not thinking enough like a statist. You’ll need parts to maintain your 25-30 year old car. The government will make selling spare parts to non-self drive cars illegal. I could see them making driving yourself illegal outright.
Sounds crazy, I know, but we DID just spend about 6 months fighting about what bathroom transgender people should use so nothing’s too crazy anymore.
right...and the cars will fly and everybody will live in a land of plenty and virtual paradise..
whatever is this guy smoking?
Just lookin’ out the window and it appears that I would benefit from some friggin’ bunny control. And we ain’t talkin’ playboy either.
Owned cars aren’t mere transport. They’re storage units for personal “might need it” gear. They’re custom equipped (kid seats, phone chargers, seats positioned perfectly). They need not be completely vacated (”I’ll put that stuff away tomorrow”). They’re available on a moment’s notice (”oh $#!^ we’re late”).
Author doesn’t understand US non-urban car culture.
Perhaps for an urban commuter but yea, I don’t think for one minute cars as a service will replace your own vehicle. You have been able to hire a car since they were invented, hasn’t slowed down the need/desire for folks to own their own vehicle.
Stupid prediction by stupid people.
For example, there was genuine fear in this country when airplanes were invented. Many people were horrified at the prospect of having these infernal "flying machines" up in the air. They envisioned that these machines would fall out of the sky and destroy their homes and property. Or drop bombs on them while they were sleeping. They saw airplanes overhead as a threat to their privacy. And so on and so on.
It didn't quite turn out like that and while the privacy concerns were certainly warranted (now satellites in space do the job more effectively), people don't even pay attention to all the planes in the air.
One of my favorite things to do just after sunset is see all the satellites moving through the skies. Many people are not even aware that you can see satellites with the naked eye just after sunset. They don't even think about them being up there. Even though these satellites are so sophisticated they can read the license plate off your car in the driveway.
Yeah, you gotta read it with a Keith Urban accent playing in your head. ;-)
These long range predictions are worthless.
In 1975 they thought that by 1990 20% of cars would be electric to cope with OPEC. Perhaps we had 20 electric cars in the 1990s not 20%.
“.... airplanes overhead as a threat to their privacy.... “ Now we have teens with friggin’ drones to invade a person’s privacy. LOL!
But what the author describes is surely “the plan”. Global governments ready to enforce, bit by bit.
who is promoting this garbage?
Remember the flying cars predictions?
Red Barchetta.
Like on the Jetsons and disney’s tomorrowland? LOL!
I think we are getting dangerously close to total government control where all rural and suburban centers will be depopulated and residents sent to the cities. There will be vast numbers of small towns, villages and little cities demolished as part of the vast tracts of land to be owned by megafarms and food industrial plants where our land is used not by us who own it but by the government to grow food to feed the vast numbers of starving in the world.
We in the cities will starve as the whole effort will aid in eliminating people of European extraction who drove the industrial revolution, etc. The uber rich will run it all and finally end up living in habitats circling the earth. Like the LAX wealthy lounge where sarcasm is thinly veiled by the little Ipad allowing the rich to watch the struggling middle class as they attempt to negotiate the lines of the main concourse.
A very small number of people will control all wealth and make all determinations of the fate of those of us who were quite happy lively modestly for the greater part of our lives. Living with a lack of greed might have meant the death knell to our genetic line.
I agree. This is crap and humans will rebel. We love our cars. Remember when they said we’d all want google glasses and smart fridges? We just aren’t that stupid.
I guess they forget people really live in fly-over country. We’re not giving up our trucks.

Leftists have been busy trying to herd people in to urban settings. So they can have all the non-urban paradise for themselves.
What kind of Propaganda are you trying to sell me. I know the globalists want to rob us and make us their slaves. They want to kill off 85% of the population and keep us in death camps. There is no way I can walk 20 miles to town to get groceries and walk back. These people are mentally ill.
