Biggest orchards could soon use robot fruist pickers.
UK Daily Mail ^ | 04/28/2017 | Shivali Best

Harvesting Washington state's vast fruit orchards each year requires thousands of farm-workers, and many of them work illegally in the US. Two of the biggest orchards could soon replace the majority of these workers with robots that don't get tired and can work 24 hours a day. FFRobotics and Abundant Robotics, of Hayward, California, are racing to get their mechanical pickers to market within the next couple of years...Experienced pickers, who are paid by the bin, can make more than $200 (£155) a day...advocates for farm-workers say robot pickers will have a negative effect.

If one used a person paid the same as a NYC licensed electrician to pick CA lettuce would add $.06 per head.

They might have an “oil spill” on it instead.

The liberal’s solution to this “problem” (no illegal immigrants equals less democratic voters) will be to tax the robots until they were no longer economically feasible.

Count on it.

Or—the liberals could get a little creative and have civil rights protests demanding that robots get voting rights (and requiring that they have a hard-wired Internet connection to the Democratic National Committee mainframe before voting).

;-)

I’m not sure what connection you’re trying to make :)

Being a generous country, we should expedite the return of the soon to be surplus “valuable members of the community” back to their home countries.

The article estimates 10 or 20 years for the industry to shift to predominantly robot harvesting.

That same timeframe will be running concurrently in many other industries, as robots acquire more human-competitive abilities; like mobility, dexterity, vision, and the knowledge to make good judgements (like ripeness or spoilage).

Robots will be taking over most manual tasks over a similar timeframe - the last generation of humans forced to do old-fashioned dirty, dangerous, boring and repetitive drudge work.

Should be fruit

If you had double-checked before posting, it would have been "fruit" in the title.

“If one used a person paid the same as a NYC licensed electrician to pick CA lettuce would add $.06 per head.”

So...the $65 hr electrician is going to pick how many heads of lettuce per hour? It’s your story, you should be able to finish it.

“They might have an “oil spill” on it instead.”

Of course they would have used PCB oil in the robots.

Suppose a nasty bug, like the one sweeping the world now, gets loosed on a bunch of AI robots.

Or, you could believe as John McCain does that Americans can’t work as hard as Mexicans. They just don’t have what it takes to pick lettuce in the Yuma sunshine:

Demand these robots get paid at the living wage rate.

Demand income tax from them (through the farmer).

Demand the robot gets overtime (increases wages, more to tax).

Demand that they sign up for health care, pay SS, Medicare, Workman’s comp...

Leaves the illegals more time for that spray painting and molesting.

“The work is hard and dangerous, and has long drawn Mexican workers to central Washington, where several counties near the Canadian border are now majority-Hispanic.”

= = =
Well, it is a physical job. Takes the place of a workout in the gym. You don’t get fat.

Dangerous???
Biggest danger today is stepping in illegals’ crap.
