Michelle Obama on kids complaining about school meals: 'We are the adults in the room'
Washington Examiner ^ | May 12, 2017 | by Kimberly Leonard

Former first lady Michelle Obama on Friday bashed critics who complain that kids don't like the healthier food served under the school meal changes implemented during the Obama administration.

"How about we not let kids completely guide everything?" she said, speaking at the annual summit on childhood obesity for the Partnership for a Healthier America. "How about we stop asking kids how they feel about their food? Kids, my kids included, if they could eat pizza and french fries every day with ice cream on top and a soda, they would think they were happy, until they got sick.

"That to me is one of the most ridiculous things we talk about in this movement, that the kids aren't happy. Well, you know what? Kids don't like math, either. So what are we going to do, stop teaching math? We gonna cut history out because there are kids who are bored with history? We are the adults in the room, you know? They look to us. So let's just stop with that. I'm good if kids are mad at me."

When asked about the possibility about delaying the nutrition labels requirements, Obama replied: "Keep families ignorant. That's all I'm hearing. You don't need to know what's in your food. You can't handle that, mom. Just buy this, be quiet, spend your money … I would be highly insulted by that thought. You want to talk about nanny state and government intervention? You just buy the food and be quiet. You don't need to know what's in it. That's essentially what a move like this is saying to you, mom."

Why do I suspect that few if any public schools has a menu offering like that and that food prep at Sidwell Friends is closer to a four star restaurant than to any public school’s?

I guess I’m an incurable cynic.

When they closed the vending machines on the school here, teachers and students went into the junk food business. There would be a line out the door and down the hall every morning from the Spanish teacher’s room for those dangerous pop tarts at $1.50 each. Big lollipops were also a great selling item for 50c.

Sorry Michelle....Thes children have parents. It’s ABSOLUTELY none of your business what they should eat.

Wouldn’t the parents be “the adults in the room”?

Exactly. It’s up to parents to TEACH our children to make their own good choices, not take their choices away. As a lunch room mom, I see the children throw 90% of the food they had no choice away. It seems odd that the answer to “hungry Kids” is hungry kids!

We gonna cut history out because there are kids who are bored with history?

You mean like the Confederate Battle Flag or the statues in the south of their heritage - oh no, those are you “adults in the room”

If they had left in recess and gym everyday that wouldn’t have been an issue. Too many people have life long food issues because of well meaning adult intervention during their childhoods.

No, Democrats are NOT the adults in the room. They are the mentally ill, morally bankrupt, and intellectually vacuous ones in the room.

This is and has been Standard Policy for over 40 years now, maybe if she would put down the bon bons she would know that.

I happen to know that this is exactly what is happening. Kids are throwing away their school lunch and going hungry or eating far worse fare from the local corner store.

That big ol’ heifer has no idea what she is talking about-not only was the food served in schools tasteless crap, it was just pre-cooked, frozen stuff reheated in a microwave in the cafeteria-you couldn’t even make a positive ID on most of it-if it isn’t fresh food, it isn’t healthy food...
