And we are told that .gov can safely operate Yucca Mountain for 10,000 years.
Hanford is a federal facility going all the way back to the Manhatten Project.
Had a friend who worked for a contractor that was decommissioning the older buildings on the reservation. All the work was being done with remotely controlled robots because of the heavy, heavy radioactivity. Nothing came offsite, just simply broken down, consolidated, packaged, and stored. When the radiation would finally finish off a robot, it was just abandoned in place and another one sent in to pickup where it stopped. He ultimately moved onto more interesting work, but the work will go on for. centuries.
The only plus side is that because of the reservation’s very restricted access and human avoidance of radioactivity, Hanford is a massive wildlife preserve like Chernobyl has become.
It’s a federal facility. The federal nuclear facilities have more problems than you can shake a stick at.
Guess who’s not regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission?

I live in Washington state, but far upwind of Hanford.
Hanford has a long history of trouble.
Shelter in place instructions have been issued, and are very rare even at Hanford.
If it turns out that plutonium particles have escaped (possible, but not confirmed) then this could be the worst yet.

I have done work at fernald plute plant, nerve and mustard gas bunkers, aberdeen proving ground..let it be sufficient to say many sites, not all are severely lacking in protocol, and the labs look like 3rd grade chemistry sets..failure on nerve gas bunkers can kill a good bit of the east coast..they probably wouldn’t tell anyone to avoid the panic..
here is a true story, a technician in my old company received a device colorimeter they used at aberdeen proving ground.there were no warnings etc, he opened the box and began working on the device, about an hour later his arm swole up and he was starting to have trouble breathing, rushed to the hospital, hospital said it looked like poisoning of some sort, so they called aberdeen, they said they could not comment, the affected tech almost died before an agent showed up with an injection, said nothing, gave him the shot and left...does that sound like a government you can feel safe about?
Standards in the 50s when this was started were poor compared to today. It is still one of the most dangerous sites in the US due that what was made there.
The Government wouldn’t say it was safe if it wasn’t, just ask John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Dick Powell, and Karen Silkwood.
The PFP is in the final stages of decommissioning. The buildings have been demolished and site restoration is ongoing.
A manager sent a message to all personnel telling them to "secure ventilation in your building" and "refrain from eating or drinking."
