Via The Seattle Times:
Mayor Ed Murrays soda-tax legislation led to criticism it was unfair because white and affluent people tend to drink more diet drinks. The mayors revised proposal lowers the tax rate slightly and adds diet soda.
The changes were recommendations that emerged when staff from the mayors office and the office of Councilmember Tim Burgess studied disparate impacts the tax could have on people with low incomes and on people of color, according to Murray.
That work involved conversations with community advocates, public-health professionals and business owners, according to the mayor. After Murrays initial announcement, some suggested the exclusion of beverages with artificial sweeteners would be unfair because affluent white people tend to consume more diet drinks.
The tax, which is meant to fund education for minorities, is undergoing some changes. At first, the tax was to make distributors of sugary drinks pay 2 cents per ounce with the mayor claiming it would bring in $16 million.

I hope some smart “white person” takes this thing to court to examine whether the government can impost a tax designed to target only “white people.
My friend puts the gram weight of crushed dry ice as is required for a CO2 refill in the CO2 bottle when it needs a refill. The dry ice costs him about $7. A 14.8 oz bottle of diet cola syrup is $3.83 and will make 19 12oz servings
They don’t get educated because that is “acting white”.
We have a Soda Stream with an adapter from ebay that allows use CO2 bottles that can be filled at sporting goods stores that service paintball guns. It costs $2.50 to fill a 12oz CO2 bottle. I can also fill the little bottles from a CO2 tank I use with my MIG welder.
Maybe this will result in there being more diet soda on the shelves. For decades I have noticed that not only in stores, but also at meetings and parties, the diet drinks are always gone first and the sugar-loaded bottles are sitting there. Why have they not learned? Do they have to take a certain number of each, regardless of how fast the stock moves?
Peripheral to the subject, which of course is another racist outrage, but a continual annoyance.
white and affluent people tend to drink more diet drinks

Well the natural next step would be to take the tax money and GIVE MD20/20 to the unaffluent?
Wasn’t R Reagan accused of suggesting to declare Ripple an ‘imported wine’ so the poor could celebrate his inauguration?
I swear to God if visiting Seattle I’ll never buy a drink ever....I’ll ask for a glass of water if they allow that...
So it’s a race tax to fund racially discriminatory programs.
Nice.
I forgot about him :)
That’s the good thing about living and working on Staten Island.
You forget you’re part of NYC after a while :)
And we’ll switch to drinking carbonated drinks like Crystal Geyser and Perrier like products.
So, FU...
[because white and affluent people tend to drink more diet drinks]
Just to let you know, they’re on to you, with all your cash and your diet drinks while you drive your Ferrari all over the place. And then fly your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia, to see the total eclipse of the Sun.......
Well, well, well....surprise, surprise, surprise.
I am just shocked. SHOCKED I TELL YA!!!
It would only generate the 16-million if idiots went out and bought only from local dealers within the city limits. Most people will go outside of the city....buy bulk....and bring the drinks with them to work. So, at best, in a year...instead of 16-million, I’d lean more toward 4-million instead.
A real news media would examine the numbers and identify this as a tax failure, but I doubt if you have such a vehicle in Seattle.
I thought bill diblasio was bad. This guy takes the cake!
Why are “poor people” throwing away money on any kind of soft drinks? Should be drinking tap water.
How much money would Seattle lose if Coke and Pepsi stopped selling their products there? What would be even funnier than watching that homosexual bigot lose any “anticipated” revenue on a “white tax”, would be to watch Seattle lose “current revenue” from sales taxes on those products. I am guessing it is a lot.
I thought Seattlonians were coffee snobs and cork sniffers... If not, then what is their beverage of choice? Back in the 60’s the cook outs of my youth (in Mountlake Terrace) always featured Rainier beer, ring bologna, hamburgers, hotdogs etc...
If memory serves... the Arkansas transplants behind us were drinking the newly invented Mountain Dew and snacking on the just introduced Fritos... gosh exciting times in junk food abounded all around us... but Mom, ever the responsible budget queen was having non of that overpriced snack food in her pantry... we ate stove top popcorn (I still do), whilst the Arkansas transplants were Jiffy popping... how the heck did I drift into that soliloquy? Must...have...coffee...
In my experience over the last decade or so, people are increasingly avoiding any type of soda. Diet soda causes separate problems, and no doctor or dietician recommends drinking it (many will outright condemn it). Often I can buy 4 2-liter bottles for $4 at my local supermarket; like tobacco companies, soda companies are diversifying their products because soda has no future here in the way it did in the past.
