My story is the opposite. Was coming back from Vancouver, BC and was detained at the border by US Customs over the purchase of 2 sweaters. I figured the customs agent was dumb and paid downtown tourist price ($450 each) and was pissed because I declared paying only $125 each because I bought mine at some out of the way shop. He kept us there for about an hour even though I had the receipt. This was in 1981.

My story: I was crossing into Canada at Niagara Falls when this Canadian Customs dude asked me if I had any firearms in the car. I didn’t and told him so, no problem. But then he asked me if I OWNED any firearms. Well, my wife and I were on a tight schedule, so I just said that I didn’t. But if I had not been on a schedule, since I was infuriated by the question, I would have told him it was none of his damn business what I owned.
