Trump to pull feds out of K-12 education
The Washington Times ^ | 04/26/2017 | S. A. Miller

President Trump will sign an executive order Wednesday to start pulling the federal government out of K-12 education, following through on a campaign promise to return schools to state and local control.

The order, dubbed the “Education Federalism Executive Order,” will launch a 300-day review of Obama-era regulations and guidance for school districts and direct Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to modify or repeal measures deemed an overreach by the federal government, according to a senior administration official

“With this executive order, President Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to getting the federal government out of the way and returning control over education back where it belongs at the state and local level,” said the officials, who briefed reporters on background in advance of the signing ceremony later Wednesday.

Echoing Mr. Trump’s views on education, the official stressed that since the founding of the U.S., schools were intended to be under state control, but the federal government has increasingly usurped that authority.

We still need to get states, counties, and towns out of “education.”

Abolishing Common Core and getting the feds OUT of state and local public education would go a long way toward fulfilling important promises. I can't imagine any states or local governments would be upset about the end of federal regulation.

One fringe benefit immediately...less employees and wasted time on fulfilling federal regulations and on all the idiot testing. That will be an immediate budgetary savings!

It’s much easier to govern America without Congress. All we need is a dictator and an all-powerful judiciary.

Won't be good enough for some Freepers, because Ivanka...

Give us some credit. Our concerns about Ivanka are legitimate and have nothing to do with education policy.

The one we didn’t elect.

So tired of electing people who are hamstrung at every turn by a non-elected politicized judiciary.

Trump is, without doubt, the boldest president I have ever seen in my lifetime.

The left will spontaneously combust over this.

I was searching for an update on this last week.

Only thing that came up were “Is Trump abandoning his pledge to eliminate Common Core?” articles.

This is awesome news!

Winning doesn’t get old. There is nothing in the constitution giving the federal government any authority over education. So all education decision should be at the state and local level.

“Won’t be good enough for some FReepers, because Ivanka”

You got that right. Never saw so many calling for the head of a presidential advisor in my life. You’d think Ivanka was V Jarrett x100 the way people in FR have been acting lately.

Well in my state the state constitution says that the state will provide all children with a free primary education. So we would need to change our state constitution.

Personally, I believe a state should be involved with education and insuring every child has the opportunity to learn.

Now, it's time to get the teachers' unions out of the equation, because teachers' unions are about the employment rights and political agenda of bureaucracies, not the improved learning performance of children.

Let's repeat that: teachers' union leaders, and the political powers they control, emphasize the employment rights of teachers, not the improved learning performance of children.

Guaranteeing parents' tax dollars are used in schools not controlled by the vast bureaucratic monopoly of unions and politicians should be the goal of the new Administration. Otherwise, the rights of children to learn and to grow in wisdom and understanding are denied.

This an ordered review of DoEd regs and policies. While I am totally in support of local control of public education, there are a lot of laws that will remain even after the review. Some of those laws are needed, some aren't.

I would submit that the problems with public education don't always originate at the federal level. Just as many problems start at the local level. That comes from the type of people in control of education. In their warped sense of the world, educating kids is way down their list of priorities.

Please... Congress ceded its power and authority to the other two branches and the bureaucratic state long ago.

They're now little more than the top of the welfare state food chain.
